news roundup

Post by Alephcat »

It has been a very busy week for Linux Mint, many new features have been added and Bea has gone gold. An add on disc has also been proposed and has started to be put together, although it is not certain whether it will end up as a CD or DVD.

Some of the new features in brief
OpenOffice.org 2.1 - the latest version of the popular office suite
MintWiFi - this is not so much a standalone feature as a collection of features which include; ndiswrapper 1.1 and 1.8, ndisgtk (a GTK based frontend for ndiswrapper, allowing an easy way to install Windows wireless drivers.), an HTML guide on how to install WiFi under Mint Linux, and finally more wireless drivers than can comfortably be accommodated here, for a full list http://lt.k1011.nutime.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=286
MintDesktop - it is unclear as to exactly what this is but it sounds like something to help those new to Linux Mint and possibly Linux find their way around.

Bea release
Beta 028 has gone into final testing and baring any major blocker bugs will be the final release candidate that is published on 20/12/2006.

Add on disc
An add on disc was proposed and is being built by jonpackard. What exactly this will contain is uncertain at the moment but the requests have included pretty much anything and everything so it could include anything that is not on the main CD by default.

Forum news
The forum itself has undergone some changes this week through the introduction of flag avatars which members can use to show which country they are posting from.

Hello alephcat,
Thanks for a comprehensive news bulletin. It's a good start. I think 'News Roundup" should come under its own heading.

Hi Alephcat. Great work on the newsletter. The first release of the Add-on disc will be a CD. I apologize for the mystery concerning its contents. At this point I know for sure that I will be including additional language packs and KDE. I am considering adding XFCE, as that is popular for users that have lower memory and CPU specs, or simply prefer that environment. I will be including as many applications as I can fit onto the disc. A lot of really great suggestions have been made and I will try to get as many of them on the disc as possible. There will also be a few items not installable by Synaptic, such as install files for proprietary video drivers. Please post on the following thread if you have any suggestions. Thanks! http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=319
