Hi folks,
Have a AMD based laptop (Turion64) with an ATI X1200 chipset. I gave up on Jaunty, but Mint seems to be working well, atleast until it totally halted on me. Was doing a big compile gcc, fan was going pretty hard, then a hard stop (as if I'd held the power key for 5s).
As a side not, I mentioned my video card because my display flickers. I had tried downloading/installing the proprietary ATI drivers, but I haven't been able to get the new drivers working yet.
Any ideas of why it might do a sudden halt?
TIA
Mike

And the compile would take how long, normally ?drmikecrowe wrote:Was doing a big compile gcc, fan was going pretty hard, then a hard stop (as if I'd held the power key for 5s)...Any ideas of why it might do a sudden halt?
You hit it, you were hammering your system, hard drive, cpu, video and power + fan
--maybe it overheated and being a smart system, decided to halt/power off rather than risk any further damage
- HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.

No warning? No shutdown? No Error?
Is that really the failure mechanism for linux? I've never seen that running servers for years.

Re: Hard shutdown with heavy compile?
No, it's a hardware safety mechanism! To protect laptops from people that think a desktop OS & their laptop is a server!

Re: Hard shutdown with heavy compile?
2 years ago, I ran gutsy on this laptop as the primary OS for over 9 months. I regularly did tasks like this on this hardware.
I have also relayed that it's a new install, and I know I have hardware driver issues.
I really appreciate the help.

Re: Hard shutdown with heavy compile?
Of course you already know of the well documented ATI/Intel bugs that are in the kernel of Jaunty,Gloria, and all other distros that use this kernel.
In a nutshell ? , go back to your favorite flavor of Mint 6, and patiently wait for Helena/Karmic.
or try the use at your own risk solution here: (please read the whole post)
