[Solved]"Gloria" KDE RC1 DVD will not boot on Laptop

Post by Fintan »

Hello,
I just downloaded a copy of "Gloria" KDE RC1 and burned it to a DVD.

It boots fine on my desktop but is not recognized on my laptop (HP ze4931ea, 512 mb RAM )

I have my bios set to boot cd first.

I would like to test it on this laptop.

Any ideas?

If it boots fine on one computer we can exclude a faulty disk (to 99.99%)
Have you tried Compatibility mode? (Press any key while the CD counts down)
not recognized
You mean it is ignored and the boot just goes on as if nothing happened?

Hi,
How's the laptop when you play a dvd movie?

Another thought . . Does your laptop have the "Press F12 for Alt Boot" (or some such) on initial boot startup screen?

thank you

Playing DVD movie works fine.

F12 does nothing and when I try to load the live DVD while running Kubuntu it is not recognized.

On the desktop it is recognized and I can open in dolphin.

Hmmm....

Just a thought - can the laptop play data DVDs at all?

Hello Husse,
interesting, and the answer is: it doesn't look like it. My desktop does.

I have not seen this before. In fact it would not have crossed my mind that there could be a restricion.

I mean what is a dvd / cd player for when not to also load data?

I have seen this before - or at least something similar, but it's mostly different disks with different quality that is a problem
And there is a considerable difference between data and movies on disk
Any hardware settings somewhere?

Okay, I understand.
I haven't set anything. I wouldn't know where.

I am running kde4.3RC2 and system settings gives nothing.
I can't find anything anywhere else I can think of. which to be honest isn't saying much

Now some bells start ringing, but only very faint....
I think there is the exact same problem described somewhere in the forum, but how to dig it up?

I've seen this happen and I use Remastersys also. As one poster suggested it might be remastersys. If it is remastersys try updating to the most current version of remastersys. Also trying burning at 4x. By any chance is this a Sony DVD-RW drive? Can you boot another operating system using the same DVD drive?

we use mintconstructor to build the ISO.

are you using a DVD-R or DVD-RW?
I have found some DVD drives do not like DVD-RW disks, even new DVD drives, slimline ones in servers.
Try a DVD-R.

There is no need to use foul language and you did not ask if he was using a DVD-R.
We are all trying to help and Boo is like me a very busy man so he just jumps in and "shoots from the hip"
I have seen a case where multimedia but not data CD or DVD was playable somewhere in the forum I think, but I can't find it or remember what happened

Husse,
Sorry for a girl geek trying to have a sense of humor.
I was actually giving Boo a complement because I was thinking the same thing as one of the solutions but didn't type it.
I used the asterick in hoping that I wouldn't offend anyone.
I apologize for offending you.

In my situation I was using the "d" word as slang.
Check this for more info on how I was using the "d" word.
So I won't offend anyone go here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=****
In place of the astericks above use the "d" word
Scroll down to section 2 and number 2.
"An expression of awe."

Language problems perhaps, but in that context I did not read damned as "damned good", but when you explain it.....
Please remember that lots of people (includes Husse would you believe it) does not have English as their mother tongue
