Looks like a bad install to me too!
xfconfd isn't running (D-Bus setup problem);
xfconfd is NEEDED to start a session.
environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is set incorrectly (must include "/etc"),
/etc directory is also NEEDED for the Operating System to function.
or xfce4-session is installed incorrectly
Installed incorrectly !

zepita's experience says it all . . check the md5sum, burn as slow as possible . . .

Yup, live CD.

You didn't mention if you were double-booting with Windows, but if Mint is the only OS, then when you get to step 4, the Partitioner, you can just click "Use entire disk", it will overwrite the old install, and automatically set up the proper structure.
