Don't Like KDE4

If I am not mistaken, gksudo is used if you're running the Gnome desktop, and kdesudo is for, well... KDE.

But he is looking for something to edit text files as root, which is why I posted what I did above. If he follows the instructions, then he should be able to do what it is he wants.

So in essence, copy and paste this into a text file:

And save it in your "$HOME/.kde(4)/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus" folder.

Then when you/he right click the specific file you should have an option to Edit as Root, which will open kwrite.

Simple.

Well, I installed Mint KDE just to try it and gksudo dolphin brings up Dolphin as root lickety split.

I thought the same as you. But I saw someone else using gksudo in another KDE thread somewhere.

I wasn't really sure what he wanted.

• Pat's notes said something/somewhere that old .kde configs might not work correctly. This has been my experience with konsole, kate and konqueror, so I moved my old .kde aside and let kde-4 create a new set of .kde directories/files and all the problems seem to have gone away except for some oddities when ssh'ing using knsole which are minor ATM.
  
  Konqueor can still be used as your default file manager (my preference when gui) Change it in System Settings > Default Applications.

I have been a Gnome user for quite a few years but I am running LinuxMint 7 KDE as my main operating system now. For me KDE 4,2,4 has some bling and is getting very functional now but it does take some getting used to. The most difficult thing for me was getting used to configuring the panel! I respect your choice to use the main edition, it is awesome and I give you credit for trying KDE 4.2.4. Linux is all about choice and LinuxMint provides some very nice desktop environments to choose from. I will have a tough choice when the Mint 8 releases come out and the Intel issue is resolved out of the box.

A longtime Gnome simplicity lover now it seems buried in time. KDE4 is evolving continuosly and Linux KDE 4.3.1 is plain awesome, better than W7, Mac or anything else. Can't wait Mint 7 KDE developers update repositories

I'm reading this with interest, as I have several machines with Mint5 and KDE 3.5 (and several with Kubuntu 8.04) - all of them work really well, including this Latitude C640 laptop. I really like the look and feel, and everything works so well - wireless networking, file sharing, printing, managing my iPod, etc. However, support is ending, so I've tried loading up a couple of distros with KDE4 on a spare hard drive just to see what it's like. I'm going to try again shortly, but man - it's so damn ugly and I can't figure out how to do anything, and it feels slow. And I'll have to set everything up again.

I assume I can find a theme that looks better and learn how to make it work, but my enthusiasm is...... low. I'm going to give it a real shot this time (previously I deleted my tests installs as I did not have a good extra drive), but I dunno how it will work out. Maybe Gnome is in my future - I will try that too.

I'm finding this an extremely interesting thread. I'm currently using the main edition of Gloria but have KDE on a live CD with version 4.2 point something. I think the live CD (downloaded on August 7th, 2009 per my notes) is the most current version.

A lot of the comments in this thread talk about KDE 4.3. Is there a convenient way to see what it looks like without installing the live CD and presumably downloading 4.3 from a repository? I'm very curious as to what it looks like and, if it's functioning well, trying it out. I have only one laptop and am not really keen on adding a second OS due to hard drive space. (It's an older laptop with a 60 something byte hard drive).

Is there a way to try Mint KDE with 4.3 somehow? I've used 3.5.10 in the past in another distro before settling on Mint as my OS. I liked KDE 3.5.10 (and earlier). I know that 4 is essential a different desktop. I don't want change from Mint (as I've got it working for me -- or it's got me working for it...). Suggestion would be appreciated so I can say I DO like KDE4.
