Hey dudes and/or dudets (can't leave out the Linux Mint hermaphrodite community),
I have a iPod touch I got for free, but syncing it seems to be a problem. I'd like to have something that just syncs tom boy notes, and thunderbird calendar, and some music. it's gotta have a keyboard (or touch screen keyboard)
It'd be nice if I could use it as a phone too, whether that means I can use my AT&T sim card with it or through skype. any-one know of a good CHEAP portable device that can do this? I'd like to buy a used one off of ebay. Don't want to sign a contract with a phone company for a new one.

--depends on Ipod/Iphone version; firmware greater than 1.3 versions, eg 2x versions with Apple's encryption will still likely cause you problems..

I checked out archos, but they are too pricey/big/fancy and the "cheap" ones cant sync thunderbird / google calendar stuff. I'm now interested in getting an unlocked Blackberry curve 8320. from my research, it's the first Blackberry to have integrated wifi, it has all that organizer stuff, bluetooth, an expandable music player, obviously a phone, it doesn't have the stupid glitchy windows mobile OS, it's a blackberry not named storm (therefore it's awesome) and it's over 2 years old, meaning I can find it on the cheap. I may not actually get it until November with a black Friday sale. it's more of a gift than necessity, I've had the same phone for over 4 years now and I'm craving a new one for some time now. I want an unlocked one because I think paying for a data plan is stupid when you are surrounded by free wifi and I don't want a contract with t-mobile.
I've always been an apple hater. I don't like how apple refuses to acknowledge the presence of Linux. As revolutionary as the iPod touch is... after the novelty wears off, it doesn't really have any unique features (I only "buy" free apps), you can't find in a good smart phone. why not have a phone and the features of the touch that i like in one Linux syncable package I actually like the simple black and white interface and jog dial of my ancient Creative zen Nomad jukebox better than the iPod touches interface (also it's a 40gig drive!). Google maps, safari, and the notepad feature are pretty much the only apps I use.
the phone I have currently is a Motorola C139
which, by the way, this is a f*ckin solid phone. it only cost $20 w/o a contract, and you can chuck it down a flight of stairs, run over it with a bus, and pass it through your digestive track and it just keeps working. If you want A PHONE and nothing else or you want a back up phone I highly recommend picking one up. that way, if you ever break an AT&T phone, just take out the sim card and throw it in this one, and keep on doing what you do.
