Installing like Wubi on Windows 7 RC

Post by keljaden »

I am running windows 7 RC 7100. I popped in the linux mint 7 disk just like I did on my win xp machine and told it to do the "wubi" like install of linux mint. Restarts and then....my only boot option is windows...actually it didn't even give me an option like it normally does. just went straight into windows 7. Works fine in my XP pro box. Not sure why it is failing here. I have one 320 gig Sata drive so nothing fancy. The normal Wubi installer works. So why is this linux mint failing. I love linux mint and if they supported a few more games I wouldn't hesitate to be using this as my ONLY OS. (WINE is so awesome.)

So why is this Wubi like version failing and what can I do to fix it. I am not new to linux but I am know where near as knowledgeable about it as I am with windows. Please help.

mit4win is forked off wubi so they are not identical
I think I have to ask merlwiz79 who maintains mint4win

You need to run in in Compatibility Mode.(Vista)

I just popped this disc in, install, worked :)

This is on a clean installation of win7 though.
Not with mint4win.
I have tested it and it doesn't work.
I tried to change the code but it would read it.(still didn't work with Win7)
I hope I can get the next version to work with Win7.

As I wrote wubi and mint4win are not identical so sometimes the one won't work when the other one will
I think this will please merlwiz79
It may be hardware related - to help fixing this could you post lspci and also the exact version of Windows 7 you use

i can post a video if you like ;)
Ok it's because you have Windows XP too.
It won't work if you have only Windows 7.
With XP installed Windows 7 installs a boot manager that's compatible for XP.
Then mint4win installs using the XP boot.ini and the Windows 7 Boot Manager adds the entry.

It works on Vista just fine.
It just can't detect Windows 7 and Windows 7 uses the same boot manager as Vista.
So when It's ran in compatibility mode(Vista) it detects as Vista and adds the entry.
