The XFCE edition has wicd instead of Network Manager
Wicd is generally better except it can't (easily) handle 3g connections so it should work
Some people report you have to install linux-backports-modules-jaunty to get AR9285 working

Depending on if this is a USB or a PCI device run lsusb or lspci -vvnn (l is a lower case L) and post here
The lspci -vvnn only the section for the card, please

Glad it worked
Just a comment - lspci -vvnn will be the same regardless of what you do - that is "engraved" in the firmware of the device
