Former Slackware user but now I really enjoy Linux Mint...
Everything works like a charm.
Although I am not afraid of console and manually file editing, after trying the latest slackware 13 for two days I quickly came back to Mint.

Well, is there a nice way of installing xfce along with gnome in Gloria 7 and have the option to choose which one to start at login screen?

You're right, xfce is more suitable for low specs computers and laptops.
KDE is more resource hungry, than comes gnome, and the most lighter, simpler, no bloat, is xfce.
There might be issues with some missing libraries or fonts, but it runs like Speedy Gonzales

My 2 Cents worth

Congratulations. I had used an earlier version of Mint a year or so ago. And although I liked it I ended up using a different flavor of Linux. That said. No flavor that I tried would connect my Toshiba Laptop to the internet using its built in wireless. After doing extensive search I came to understand that it was a common problem with both the Toshiba laptops and others using the same wifi chipset which required proprietary drivers which were not available. There were several workarounds that were mentioned and I tried several of them with no luck before giving up and running the laptop strictly on Vista unless hard wired to the internet.

Seeing mention today of the release of Mint 7 I thought I would download it and have a look. In the back of my mind I was thinking, maybe someday, one of these distributions will allow my wifi to work 'out of the box'.

All I can say is HALLELUJAH........I booted up the live disk that I had burned and was OVERJOYED to find out that the wireless connection was up and running with no tweaking or anything. Rite out of the box.

I am sure that I will find other new marvels in the package since my last dance with Mint Linux. You made me one happy camper today.

On my install of L M Gloria XFCE CE , using 'mintinstall' I installed my favorite browser 'Seamonkey' .However this new install version has two things missing in menu - - In manage bookmarks, tools, the Import and Export is missing. This is a very convenient way to backup bookmarks. Also the menu bar displays white-on-white.
I also have L M Gloria KDE RC1 also up and running, and its mintinstall of Seamonkey has nothing missing.

I have been away for a bit, playing with puppy linux, which is a great os. But Linux Mint is the Gods Gift to the Linux OS. Thankyou to all involved.

Great! Was in fact waiting for this day... looking forward to installing it on the PC (Athlon 1.6GHz & 256MB RAM) at my family home to dual boot with Ms Win. (my family can't yet live without her). I use only... ahem... I also actually dual boot or maybe quadruple boot - a FreeDOS & three GNU/Linux distros, primary OS being Linux Mint XFCE on my PC (PIII 533MHz & 512MB RAM)... I still keep FreeDOS to pay my tributes to the first OS that I learnt about, Ms DOS.

Coming to Mint XFCE, I read somewhere that Xubuntu hogs more memory than the GNOME based Ubuntu. Is this true with Mint XFCE also or have the developers taken care of this issue when they took the Xubuntu base for Mint XFCE?

Anyway, whatever it is... thanks to the Linux Mint XFCE CE developers (& also to the Linux Mint Main Edition developers) for bringing out such an EXCELLENT GNU/Linux OS distribution which just works out of the box... actually it is not a sense of thanks that we users have towards the developers... it is something much more than that... the word respect (as somebody in some other forum mentioned) and maybe, admiration put together addresses that sense. So, those developer guys & gals out there, keep it up!

Downloaded it,running it as we speak,and the only thing I have to say is THANK YOU again for such a wonderful xfce based distro,which is right on the tracks of its cousins,Gnome and KDE.Smooth and simple,yet effective and exactly to the point.
Just one question:
Could this run more smoothly and consume less resources on a Toshiba Satellite laptop (I have it on Ubuntu,now)?

I just tried plain Gloria, and but for one issue she's gorgeous!

That issue is the menu system, which is too much like the windows menu which I always hated. Granted, it tidies up the appearance some, and it does look sharp, but "elegance" is always relative - you really can't beat the simplicity and EFFICIENCY of the Gnome panel.

Some reviewer had stated that you have a Gnome version available, which to me would mean a triple drop-down menu system on a separate panel, where firefox, terminal, and other program links can be made always visible for fast access. While noticing that you have a version for (Kde), and even for (Xfce), I'm wondering - is that true?

if you right click on the bottom panel, a menu pops up. scroll down to "add to panel" and another window pops up which contains a bunch of different widgets and such that you can add to the panel. scroll down to the "menu bar"(a custom menu bar) selection and then highlight it, and click add. it will then attach itself to the panel, and you can right click on it again and select move, and then move it to where you want it on the panel. if you then want to remove the "mint menu" button, simply right click on it, and then select "remove from panel." you may have to unlock it from the panel first if it has become locked somehow. that is also down with a right click on the "mint menu" button, and then clicking on the lock/unlock toggle. then you can proceed to remove the item from the panel. i hope this helps.

Howdy all. I'm a moderate Linux user and I must say this distro is teriffic. I got an old notebook computer (HP, 14.1", 700 mhz, 384 mb RAM, 20 Gb HD, WiFi card, Win xp) and I wanted to put some gnu-linux on it.

I have an older Desktop system with Debian on it. I just happens that Debian has a brand new (Lenny) distribution out. I've long respected Debian, so I gave it first chance. Used a Net Install CD, went okay, made 12 Gig Win / 6 Gig Linux / Swap. Well, wireless worked, laptop functions (closing lid, reading battery) worked. But I couldn't get above 800x600 and the sound system was broken. I fought it for a couple of evenings, but as far as I can tell I would have to get / compile a new kernel or something so... No, thanks.

I moved to SUSE which I've also used and have respect for. Again, I used a Net Install CD because I read that I could choose KDE 3.5 and/or Xfce. So that's what I did. All day. Talk about slow. I installed / waited / updated / waited from about 9 am until 2 pm. What I got was Gnome! I found that I was able to switch to KDE and Xfce at boot, but... I have only 6 Gigs to use and I *specifically* didn't choose Gnome. Dare I say: confused?! The installer looked beautiful and professional, though, so that's something. Anyhow, wireless worked (yes!), 1024x768 (yes!), laptop functions worked (yes!), sound system kinda' worked, but terribly and "ick"ily (no!!!). Wouldn't play an Ogg, wouldn't play online audio, heck- wouldn't even play a CD in the CD drive.

Let's see, needed to try another distro. Well, I tried Linux Mint once in a Virtual Box and it seemed good, Debian based, with codecs & settings, nice artwork / packaging...

You know the rest of the story: Downloaded the Xfce CD, install was painless and (relatively) short, wireless works, laptop suspends, websites work, 1024x768, online sound works, plays CDs just fine, thank you. Nice. Just beautiful. One small oddity that I found: the "about xfce" menu says "Xubuntu team is http..." - Xubuntu? Kind of funny. LINUX-MINT TEAM: you've done a marvelous job.

Now the question remains: Will I get to work with this thing or am I just going to play around, distro hop, customize desktops, etc?
