burning a video dvd

Please help... complete newbie, trying to burn a video DVD from AVI files on my hard disc to a new DVD+R disc.

With Brasero, when the burn dialogue box opens it has the video options and the burn button inactive, so I cannot proceed.
There is also the message:
"Please replace the disc with a supported CD or DVD.
It is not possible to write with the current set of plugins".

My laptop does support DVD+R. What plugins do I need?

With Kb3 I get an error, the report of which is:

Have you converted the .avi to DVD format?
Try DeVeDe for that and burn the resulting image.

As above, DeVeDe is what you want. Very easy to use, and will give you an ISO image you can just burn later.

I wrote the iso image with DeVeDe successfully, but then what? I can't see a way of actually burning it to disc with DeVeDe. If I use K3b it gives me an error. If I use Brasero Disc Burner it tells me to put a valid disc in the drive (when there is one already). Surely this should be such a simple thing...

I use ManDVD to create a DVD file, then I use Brasero to burn the .mpg file to a DVD and that's it.

ManDVD is very easy to use, I've tried DeVeDe but don't understand the burning of a .iso file as I can't burn the to a disk to play in a DVD player.

If I use K3b it gives me an error.

What kind of error? In k3b, make sure you have selected to burn an image option (similarliy worded-- I'm on work Windows at the moment). After the image file is selected (.iso), let the burner calculate the md5 checksum. If you use the verify option, k3b will re-calculate the md5 from the disc just burned vs the md5 of the image file. If all is happy you get "Success".
