[SOLVED] Linux Botnet

Post by nono »

I just read this just now.. is this true?

http://blogs.computerworld.com/14723/no ... very_worry

And also, is there some problem discovered in the kernel 2.6?
Because I read somewhere that it compromised the security of linux distro's that has kernel 2.6

thank you

It's a good reminder that just because you run Linux you're not invincible. Don't run as root, don't use dictionary passwords, use some sort of firewall.

I read this part
  • Bad guys have created a botnet of Linux Web servers. In a way, that's even more frightening than regular botnets of compromised Windows PCs.
And don't know what even more frightening means, perhaps its only a reporter's hyperbole in action..

Maybe he finally realizes that Linux/Unix/Bsd runs the Internet, and that has raised his paranoia level..

There is a huge difference between a server and a desktop computer
Often it is not the server itself but poorly maintained or configured applications running on it
And any desktop/laptop should be behind a router protected by the routers firewall
This way the only way in would be through an application connected to a vicious site...

Yes, I still check it occasionally (http://www.freespire.org), but it is essentially dead, since Xandros has given up the ghost on this purchase, and we can assume they only wanted cnr as a ready to run system..
http://www.cnr.com/
--something that apparently really appeals to windows users, hence Xandros business interest..

Some abortive attempts to invigorate Linspire/Freespire have been made, like Phoenix or Imagicos or even Kiowa
--however they seem to be mostly that abortive attempts; especially that ImagicOS guy (Carlos), who to my mind simply inserted himself into Freespire forums to drum up business for himself.

http://www.imagicos.com/
--seems phoenixos is too similar to imagicos (including web site) for my taste; despite protestations of the erstwhile developer/business person leading the product..

--I don't know how close this is

I am still waiting for Beos to be fully reborn and fully developed
--multiuser, multilogin mode; I don't mind if they maintain the simplified screen look, it works; especially with the Tracker application http://www.haiku-os.org/
--they have limitations and its been about 8years, but they are trying and have something ready
And they are forgetting that Beos 5x personal edition is a free download, and since they haven't changed it much, makes them the competition to that distribution (of Beos)

http://www.bebits.com/
http://www.bebits.com/app/2680
--download of beos 5 personal edition
Also glad to see bebits is still in business..
