Well with the current release cycles it will be one after Helena if my thinking is right! So Linux Mint 9.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" is scheduled to be released at the end of April 2010.
If we go by the past, Mint 9 LTS will be released, when it's ready sometime after the release of Lucid.

So would it be better to keep running linux mint 7 until then, or go ahead and switch to the LTS now and wait until the new one is released?

If you're already running Gloria, keep with it until the new LTS if you don't want to use Helena. For other computers you could choose either the existing LTS in the meantime, or just wait for Helena in a few weeks.

If Mint 7 is running alright on your hardware then stick with it until Mint 8. Mint 7 is a lot faster than the current LTS and the applications are more up to date.

Gloria is going to be supported until 6 months after the next LTS is released. I would definitely stick with it if you are already running it.
