Open Kaffiene/Settings/Xine Engine Parameters/Decoder/Beginner Options,
make sure top panel reads:/usr/lib/win32 and bottom reads /usr/lib/codecs

Why do you want to run it as sudo?
Now it has crashed log out and log back in again.
This is a could be a Feisty Bug?

First try installing xine-ui
sudo apt-get install xine-ui if it is already installed, go to Synaptic and *Completly Remove* Kaffeine and xine-ui, and then reinstall them

I do not have any Divx to try, but you could try installing ffmpeg and libavifile, and see if that works on Kaffeine. I think you should have Mplayer installed, if not install Mplayer and Mplayer skins and follow instructions here:

Then use mplayer or VLC for Divx and Kaffeine for avi
Also if not installed try Kmplayer
And please do not run as sudo unless asked by system
