Mint 7 update icon

Postby lexon on Sun May 17, 2009 1:53 pm

I have been running Mint 7 since it was released and getting the updates. I noticed two days ago after an update that the icon does not show up anymore in the bottom panel when I boot the PC at the start of the day. No problem as I can do the updates manually like I just did a few minutes ago. Don't know if this is a bug or just because of a new update in Mint 7 that requires me to do this manually from now on.
Not a complaint, just for info.

mintUpdate was fixed this morning, just install the new version through Synaptic and things should be back to normal. :D

Thanks, about the time I read your message, I noticed the padlock was unlocked. I downloaded the one update and re-started the PC and Mint Update Icon shows up now. Thanks again. Love this Mint and I do love all the green.
I am giving away an older Linux laptop with Mint 6 CD.

Hey exploder one more semi related question about updates...

If we just update thru synaptic is it the same as running mint update?

Not exactly because mintUpdate gives you the numbered safety levels. If the repos in your sources list are not changed either update method should be safe. Level 3 and kernel updates should be done with some caution, those are the ones that can get you into trouble. mintUpdate was designed to keep your system from breaking and allow you to make informed decisions.

I considered adding this in the newbie section however as this post appears to mirror my specific problem I have posted here first.
I have installed and have been learning to use Linux (Mint) Gloria for the last two months.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the Mint update icon had disappeared from the task bar on starting up.
If I launch Mint update manually it works/updates fine.
How have I managed to do this?
How do I go about getting it back?
I have checked with Synaptic Package Manager and have the latest package update for Mint Update
I have searched the forum/Google as suggested but not found a solution to date
Many thanks in anticipation

PS I really am enjoying learning and using this distro

Hi Devaman,

I think I have a solution for you.

Go to the main Mint menu, and select preferences and scroll down to where it says 'Start Up Applications' scroll half way down this dialog and make sure mintupdate is ticked, reboot if need be for changes to take effect.

I hope this sorts you problem out.

Thanks for your help
I did as you suggested however Mint Update was already ticked as a start up item.
Does anyone else have a suggestion as to why the icon does not show up in the task bar and I have to access update manually?

Found the answer to my own question with a bit of lateral thinking.
Realized that I had lost all my icons ( inc display properties, network link etc) from the notification area of the tool bar.
Searched for lost notification area and came up with a post to re-enable the notification area of the task bar.
Followed the simple instructions and 'Hey Presto' all my icons are now back including Mint Update

As the clever folks tell us 'do a search first' and I would add 'and if that doesn't work try and think laterally and search again'
It worked for me!
