Just saw an interview with Steve Ballmer expressing his satisfaction with the Windows 7 release and the expectation that it will be a well received update for all those windows XP or Vista users, that need to upgrade

He also pointed out the various areas where Microsoft makes their billions, saying that their server side is about 10billion /year; explaining why they (corp) wasn't that worried about competition from Google or elsewhere, and expressing the corp's innovation; in which we are leaders

They also suggest a clean install, or at least a backup before installing the new OS (win7); so they must be joking or their upgrade doesn't work well enough

• No one expects Linux to replace Windows at big organizations. Linux failed to make big inroads when the vast majority of businesses skipped upgrading to Windows Vista after it came out in 2007.

The people who buy windows 7 upgrades, or get it with a new computer are those same people who might decide to buy windows 7 for the whole department/company
--and are likely to be just as enthusiastic as any of those other consumers who get windows 7 for their personal use

If I ran a business there is NO WAY I would use anything but FOSS. Open Office and Gimp and Linux are good enough for any regular business task.

That is a good, efficient and effective choice

But then unless you don't mind having a policy no salespeople can enter
--you will be inundated by sales persons and consultants wanting you to spend some money (a percentage maybe)

• in order to improve x, y,z business processing
• enhance your competitiveness
• save you money in the long term

And very likely, none of them will be suggesting any FOSS software solutions
--although such solutions; not only OpenOffice and Gimp, are available all over the Internet

  In fact all of the computers in the store except for one in the training room run Linux. The self check outs run windows so as such they are always giving us problems. (Not surprising that is the most hated station in the store)

. . . which just establishes that you don't run a business. If you did, you would know that your most important application would be accounting, and Linux accounting programs, especially for small business, just plain suck. The few that are out there are poorly designed, and difficult to use, and way too expensive for what you get.
