(SOLVED) HP Deskjet F2180 suddenly doesn't scan properly

Hi,

My HP Deskjet F2180 all-in-one was scanning fine until this morning. After scanning two or three documents it suddenly stopped scanning properly.

When I open the HP device manager (HPLIP) and click "Scan", xsane opens. The xsane control window has two progress bars at the bottom left. When I click "scan" on xsane, the upper one used to mark the progress of the scan with an advancing green stripe.

Then the image viewer opens but with no image.

Might I have inadvertently changed a vital setting? If so, I wouldn't know how or which?
Might I need a package that I don't have? (Seems unlikely since it worked till this morning).
Might something have got corrupted? If so, how can I correct it?

Did you physically check that the lamp and slider were on and moving across the scan bed.

Yes I did, they were functioning properly.

Try as a root user instead of your normal user, or creat a new user and see if it works under that one.

I can scan as another user, but not as me.
So it must be the settings, right?
What should I be looking at?

Not quite sure yet,but at least we're narrowing it down.

Solved. In Xsane, "window" -> "show preview" I clicked "Acquire preview". This did indeed acquire a preview, and apparently adjusted some settings, as then I could scan normally.

Thanks your solution worked for me too, but only when I did it from HPLIP. I had previously tried from within Gimp and from XSANE but there I just got a blank screen.

I still cannot resize the selected area...but that is a different problem
