In a terminal type su and press enter then enter password then enter fdisk -l and let us see those results, should show the partition table if you have more than one readable disk do fdisk -l /dev/sda

Shoot thought maybe removing the usb or sd card would help the boot up problem, as far as this looks I don't quite get why with the menu.lst you have why windows won't boot.

If I remember correctly as long as it's set to boot from the cd drive first won't the windows recovery disk just start right up, as far as remembering how to get the mbr restored, that's been ages ago now.

That shouldn't be the case because right as bios is completing the bios transfers to whatever is set to be the first place to look for further boot instructions (ie:cd/dvd,floppy,HD,or other) only then if it's passed on to the HD would it be finding the MBR (which should contain GRUB). If it's being told CD first then it spins up the CD looking for possible boot instructions on the first portion of the CD (the same thing it's doing when passed on to any source).

Maybe the disc is bad from the install or maybe the burn wasn't quite 100% and that lead to the issue you're having not being able to boot properly, only takes a few bits of code messed up to cause issues.

Maybe burn a new cd, ofcourse since the windows disc isn't being seen also maybe the real issue lies in the drive itself.

Try entering your bios on bootup and make sure the drive is seen by the bios and identified correctly.
