New Slogan?

Shortening to Mint? I've thought that ever since I got Mint. After all, if it's about elegance, isn't elegance simplicity?

Not meaning to bring up other companies, but I really don't think you can get much more elegant than Apple. It's just an apple when you boot up.

So dunno, but I'd love to see a boot screen that just says "mint". No slogan. If anything, scrap Gloria, Helenna, and whatever. Every Linux distro does it, but I think it'd be cool to be like... Mint 8: Fresh, if anything. A new verb as opposed to a name. Slogans, on the other hand, would be good for advertising in small snippets.

The thing I have that annoys me about the slogan is that I already have Mint. There's no need to sell it to me further. It's exactly like Windows putting advertisements in Windows Live messenger. So sell it to me, but after, stay elegant, and stay simple.

I agree you should shorten it to Mint. It definitely needs a new slogan.

Elegance has a lot of negative connotations, and frankly, I don't think Mint is all that elegant. I love Mint, but not for it's "elegance". I love it for it's simplicity. It's stability. It's ease of use. It's simple and appealing default look. It's familiarity of layout by default seeming like Windows. It's "Clean". It's "Fresh". Mint is a great name for it. The slogan is pretty meh compared to how great Mint itself is.

Simple.
Clean.
Fresh.
Easy.
Stable.
Solid.

Feel free to riff off my ideas, combine the concepts, reword them... But definitely Mint needs a new Image. I think just making it Mint would be a good first step.

Immature, I suppose. Simply combining ideas. I like the idea of different slogans though. One, nice, simple MINT with a little logo and then a slogan to advertise. Once you install it, skip the slogans. It becomes less elegant with it.

Btw, I totally agree that elegance has some negative connotations. It reminds me of the ugly stepsisters from Cinderella trying to fit their ugly feet into the glass slipper personally.

Rhy, I was unaware of any negative connotations to the word, 'elegance.' In my part of the world, I can think of no slang use of 'elegant' or 'elegance' which is different from its dictionary meaning.

Besides being 'refined' or 'sophisticated' (in it's truest sense, not just marketing), there is the old definition of 'hacking,' which always meant developing the elegant solution or workaround to a problem, before the media decided to hijack the term and make it 'evil.'

Mint should be just Mint because Apple is just Apple? Aren't we comparing Apples to oranges,or herbs? (Apple is the hardware, not the software, and Mint is the software, but not the hardware.) Does anyone know what machine Linus used to use, and which distro he still uses because it was all he could get to run on that other machine for a few years, even though he's a PC now? So much for Apple showing up on that screen! (I'll give you a hint: his Apple wore a Hat!)

Anyway, if you guys decide to change the name, or the slogan, more power to you. I like the way Mint works, and that's the most important part.

I would maybe change the name to, something like: Linux:Mint

And for a slogan (to quote Colonel Schell): Mint works ! Plain, simple, true.

I don't understand why using the past tense in the current slogan. Why "came"? When? Where is elegance now? Is it gone?

Old slogan is very clear. Maybe the word "came" is more complicated, but in this world everyone can figure out the meaning.
