How To: Project Looking Glass, 3D Desktop

Post by scorp123 »

Hello all,
just wanted to post this in case someone wants to try this. Credits go to Rumburak for posting the link in this thread:
http://lt.k1011.nutime.de/forum/viewtop ... 1995&#1995

So we need to go to this web page:
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/

You can read all the instructions there, but for the sake of simplicty here is what I did:
  • - modify your /etc/apt/sources.list so it includes these lines:

    Code: Select all

    ## LG3D repsoitories
    deb http://javadesktop.org/lg3d/debian stable contrib
    # deb http://javadesktop.org/lg3d/debian testing contrib
    # deb http://javadesktop.org/lg3d/debian unstable contrib
    - open a terminal ... You will need to say "Yes" to some SUN licenses during the installation process, so it's probably better to do this in a terminal right away. It's probably also a good idea to increase the windows size or to even maximise the terminal window for better readability of the licenses you are going to say "Yes" to later on -- never say "Yes" to anything without having it read first!

    - in the terminal, and after having modified the sources.list as mentioned above, type these commands:

    Code: Select all

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install lg3d-core

Could be that "apt" complains about the packages not being signed or that it suggests that other packages need to be downloaded too ... Just hit the "y" key to these questions so that the download process may start.
Once the download starts you can walk off and grab a coffee in the kitchen or at your office's vending machine because this will take a few minutes.

Once the download is complete and the actual package installation has begun there will be some legal "bla bla bla" from SUN, asking you three times if you agree to their licenses. Just hit "Yes" or "OK", whatever SUN wants to hear.

Once this is finished you should get a message that "Looking Glass" is now available as session in your GDM.

OK, so you logout, and when you're in front of GDM again you will be able to select "Looking Glass" as your session. Select it and type in your username and password -- and voil

Yes, while it looks nice I don't think it's as usable yet as SUN would want to make us think. Oh well. Maybe we have to wait a few more releases 8)

I'm thinking of taking a look but it's been awhile since it has been update.
Update Feb 22 2008: For support on the latests Ubuntu distributions please see the section below
https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/binary-b ... testubuntu
Maybe I'll test the unstable, maybe it's more up to date.

Well I installed it but it sucks.
The file manager can't print the olders or file names if it starts with a period.
It didn't put all the applications I had into the menu.
It wouldn't launch Firefox.
It doesn't let you change almost all of the settings.
Even thought it's suppose to be the same package as in the repo, it only installed after i downloaded it from the link in my last post.
It's hard to navigate the desktop with the cursors and the app that i am using sometimes goes under the other apps I have open.
Even the cursor sometimes goes under the active app.
