OpenOffice- Letter Wizard

Hello,

This question is about OpenOffice. I am using Linux Mint 7. I have the menu at the bottom, so I believe that is the KDE edition, although I never checked it.

When I try to use the Wizard for letters, faxes etc (ie In openoffice, click File, Wizards, and then the choice Letters, Faxes, etc) it has so far not worked, and comes up with the following message:

Open Office.org requires a JRE to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Pls select another another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-Openoffice.org-Java, Pls install the openoffice.org-java-common package for this functionality.

I tried to fix this but to no avail.

I went to Tools-Options(etc) as it says above, and it says I have Sun Microsystems Inc and under Version it says 1.6.0_16

I went to Sun's site to try to get the version, but I am doing something wrong.

Any ideas?

make absolutely sure that the jre is selected [x], it's a round selection button..
and where is it your system

• /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16/jre

--that should be the location being listed in openOffice writer, under Tools>Options>Java

The other option you have is to try another java application, such as openjava

In terminal, check

• apt search openjdk
  p openjdk-6-jdk - OpenJDK Development Kit (JDK)
  p openjdk-6-jre - OpenJDK Java runtime, using Hotspot JIT
  which java
  ls -l /usr/bin/java
  --the normal location for the java executable file..
  --which java do you have installed
  java -version
  java version "1.6.0_16"
  Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
  Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode, sharing)
  --which java version is active on your system..

You can also go to the sun site and test your java installed version (the one that is active: running)

--well they have a minor update .16 to .17 for Linux..

Hello and thanks for reply,

I tried downloading the Java again, I downloaded the self extracting file, don't know how to install it though.

I tried looking at the JRE as you said, Tools Options Openoffice.org then Java. There was a button selecting it, I couldn't change it, I couldn't put an X in it, but it looks like it is selected.

It said the same location as you wrote.


I tried those commands in terminal.
Here's what came up:

I typed: apt search....
It said: Segmentation fault

I typed: both of the p open....
It said: bash: P: command not found

I typed: java - version
It said: Exactly as you wrote in your reply

I typed: which java
It said: usr/bin/java

Oh, I neglected to mention I am talking about Linux Mint 7, KDE

Also,

One of the problems may be that I cannot use package manager, or mint install, so that Java may not download until I fix this problem.

Maybe I have to reinstall the whole Linux system? Hopefully not...........

I found that by reinstalling the entire OS (Linux Mint 7), now openoffice works correctly.
