This may sound like a silly question, but I am interested in the answer to help broaden my understanding of Linux Mint.
I have installed Linux Mint 5, Elyssa on my desktop and my laptop. When I key uname -r into the terminal on my desktop it returns 2.6.24-25-generic, but the same command on my laptop responds with 2.6.24-16-generic. I have no idea why the kernel versions are different. They were both installed at approximately the same date, and both have been regularly updated. I have made no known effort to make one kernel version any different than the other. Can someone please enlighten me as why they are not the same?

I don't have exact answer to your question, but I know what you could do to investigate the matter:
1. Fire up Synaptic.
2. Click File > History.
3. Enter 2.6.24-25 in the 'Find' input box and hit Enter.
4. You will get some logs that contain the search string.
My hunch is there was a restricted driver update that depended on linux-image-2.6.24-25-generic.

Right on garda !! It was because I added the nvidia-glx-new driver for my graphics card in the desktop.
