trouble with dual monitors

So I was given a 17' lcd monitor and decided to try having dual monitors, now the problem I have is that the second screen only mirrors the Main monitor. I tried using the system settings display options, but the rotation settings never apply so nothing changes. I tried using the ATI catalyst control center but when I choose the options as to where to move the screens it changes the resolution and it still mirrors the Main monitor. There both connected on the same graphics card, my Main monitors is DVI and secondary is VGA. On Windows XP I had no problems extending the desktop to the secondary monitor, but I want it to work on my KDE too. I'd appreciate any help with this... thanks.

In terminal, check

• inxi -F
  --short list of all OS detected hardware..

Do a single monitor setup that works correctly before adding the second monitor options..
