from avi to playable video dvd - what frustration!

I have tried turning avi files into playable video dvds using various software and have consistently failed dismally. I have read that devede is the best to create an iso image, which then can easily be burned to devede. Well, as I write devede is 13th hour of running just to produce the iso image for a two movie dvd. I have read on the Ubuntu forums that yes, it takes hours (but not 13+!) and that this is to be expected, hardware limits, couldn't expect a decent quality image in less time, etc. etc. Well if that's the case, how come in Windows on the same machine I can take three avi movie files, drop them into the dvd burning utility of DivX Player, burn and have a playable DVD in only 5 minutes?! This is just a curiosity really, because it's really not worth bothering with now. I'll just use DivX Player in Windows. Don't want to grouch but it is worth reflecting that if linux is to gain converts, this has got to be made easier and quicker.

• In the left side of the Avidemux's main window, you will notice the 'Video', 'Audio' and 'Format' sections. Let's start with the 'Video' section, click the 'Copy' button (drop-down list) and select a codec. I suggest the following codecs:
  � x264 - for a faster encoding, smaller file size and best picture quality. But you can't see the resulted video on a home DVD player, only on your PC.
  � Xvid4 - for compatibility with any standalone DVD player, but it will take about 2-3 times longer to convert the video.

• Now just rip your DVDs, you dont even need to mount them (but you can if you want to). Its taken about 25 mins for a dvd on my lappy, but YMMV. You will need to change the path to your dvd device, or you can just use the mount point instead.

• 1. Open the video source
  2. Check what video and audio codecs it requires. (VCD do not require any codec but SVCD/DVD requires a MPEG2 Codec or software DVD Player)
  Then download and install the required codecs. You find some codecs here or use google.com.

Perhaps by identifyng the avi divx codecs being used, it may help..

Update. Devede finished creating iso image after 15 hours. "Job done!" it said, pleased with itself. To be fair, it might not be a problem with that app but with the system, as the time it had recorded was only 4 hrs and something. I did notice at several stages that it seemed to have hung, but on moving the mouse it started up again. (BTW my power management is set to never put the computer to sleep). But anyway, it finished, alleluia. So I right click on the iso file, select "write to disc" and Brasero takes over. Almost finished and then it aborts with an unknown error. One more blank dvd wasted. This software is as useful as an Edit By Forum Mod on your elbow.

I've never had any probs with Devede, and it's never taken anything like what you describe timewise. That is odd. I'd suspect somethign is amiss somewhere, but not sure where to even begin. Conversion should take no longer than the length of the movie itself, less most times.

What hardware you running?
