Mint ranking on Distrowatch

Postby optimize me on Fri Aug 07, 2009 12:40 pm

I visit Distrowatch quite regularly. In the regular page-hit ranks in the right-hand column, Ubuntu has been reigning supreme at the top of the list for as long as I can remember. Their Distrowatch page-hits are always in the 1800-2200 range on the six-month spread (give or take).

But what I've noticed for about the last month or so: If you change it to a seven-day spread, Mint is crushing them by an average of 300 or so hits-per-day. If this keeps up for a few more months, Mint may just be the one to knock Ubuntu out of the top spot for the first time in a long time.

Actually it's only been at the top of the 7-day hypometer for the last 4 days (since the KDE edition came out), not months, as can be evidenced by the fact that we're not top of the 30 day version. We were top in the first couple of days after main edition was released too, but boo's KDE implementation seems to be doing the project proud given that many new features of mint were reviewed when main came out. Either way, we're on the march toward distromination :-) Just be aware that distrowatch ranking is only indicative of how interesting a distribution is over time, not necessarily an install base.

EDIT: additionally, in most of the other length listings, Mint is the only major one that is increasing, some achievement.

This is nothing short of a great acomplishment and a testament to the hard work and effort put forth by the Mint development team.

Go, MINT!!!

I also, visit DistroWatch often, I'll make it a point to watch the rankings.

The LinuxMint Team does an awesome job.
Clem and the LM team probably don't need a 'pat on the back' .... but, they would appreciate it.

Despite the fact we're now back in second on the hypometer (ubuntu released another alpha), the ranking held long enough to push us into second on the 30-day version :-) It would be nice to continue this trend, making it into a solid second in the default 6-month version.

That'll make a big push, for sure. I bet a Mint Debian release would take #1.

The problem I have with DistroWatch is it basically is surveying distro hoppers. One notices rank increases any time any distro releases a new edition. The more new editions a distro releases the higher the page ranking. I honestly would not put too much reliance on its rankings as they are not scientifically based by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, it is good to see Mint in the top 10....

True, the rankings should always be taken with a pinch of salt. I wouldn't go so far as to say it surveys distro hoppers, but it does only measure popularity and interest, rather than install base for instance. Long term trends are also more useful, notice I label the 7-day version as a "hypometer", but the clear dominance of ubuntu in the long-term rankings is a clear indicator of its popularity. Similarly, mint is consistently in the top 5, as are suse and fedora etc. It's just statistics, but they can be useful sometimes.

28% of all statistics are just BS - 87% of all people know that.

But I know for a fact that 47% of statistics are made up on the spot.

As I said above this means absolutely nothing - it always happens on distrowatch with almost any major distro immediately after a major new release. Distro hoppers just can't keep themselves from downloading newest editions of the latest and greatest whatever...

Let's get something straight here.
Without the Debian project there would not be a Ubuntu, Puppy, Knoppix, Ultimate, Mint or Pinguy or any of the other cross dressed versions we all love.
We are Debian users. Nada mas.
All the others are from guys who know how to tweak something that already existed.
Richard Petty didn't invent the small block Chevy. He perfected it for max performance.
Clem knows how to fine tune a Debian..... Ubuntu tweaked it.Clem gave it the final tune up.
It's a winner.
It's still Debian. The best OS there ever was.
