I just installed Mint 8 tonight over Mint 7 and am having some major problems. I have /home on a separate partition, which went well, except when I boot I get this: The panel encountered a problem while loading: OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet.
Can't access my wife's user account, although it's there in /home directory. I tried opening Users & Groups to find it only shows me and root. I tried entering a new account for her with the old information and it says her Home Directory already exists. It just doesn't show up.
Now my other problem is MintUpdate can't connect to download the 96 updates waiting for me. A long list of Connection Refused messages. I'm hoping the fix for the user switcher applet is included in there, but I don't understand how this stuff works.
I tried a fix that Husse suggested and then rebooted, but nothing has changed.
HELP!

Also: when I checked out Software Sources to see if changing from main server to another might help, the United States is not even listed, and when I try Select Best Server I get the choice of a server in Poland? This seems very strange. I never had any of these problems in Gloria, so I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking maybe I should reinstall Mint 7 and see what happens?

After restarting a few more times, suddenly my Mint Update works, synaptic works!
Now my only problem making my computer unusable is that there is no access to the other user account/desktop. I can't find anything called Fast User Switch Applet. Does anyone have a clue how I can get this working??
Another really odd thing is my bios seems to have been altered. It has been set to boot from cd drive first, but that does not work now. I tried booting from Mint 7 cd but it just goes right to Mint 8 whenever I reboot!
