Re: Linux Mint 8 "Helena" released!

Linux Mint 8 looks great! I've been using Mint since Daryna, and I've been relatively pleased with its development thus far.

One thing, though... OEM seems to be totally broken. And fixing it manually leads to a godawful-ugly login screen. I suggest putting a lot of work into this before releasing the next edition.

(Possibly fix it, then re-release Mint 8, so that you don't spend 6+ months with a borked OEM feature.)

You know... Just because Ubuntu releases every 6 or so months doesn't mean Mint has to as well...

EDIT: Apparently the login screen is ugly as sin by default. What happened to the Mint 7 login? Could we not have customized the Ubuntu 9.10 login theme? What happened here?

... why did you change the console login prompt to be so long? What if I don't want to advertise what OS I'm running at the login prompt? ...

I am running karmic koala right now and would like to understand the difference b/w karmic and LM 8?? I am interested in LM8 and don't understand how the 2 distros are different. Thanks.

How Mint and Ubuntu differs is a long story today
The looks
Mint has all codecs installed from the start
Mint tools
Some under the hood changes
Kubuntu and the Gloria KDE version are considerably different and this will probably be the case for Helena too
mint4win and wubi are quite different
A different forum
and more
I probably miss a lot :)

We seem to have messed up the OEM install option
A Mint 8.1 is planned when mint4win works and this will be fixed as well
Someone asked about info for the OEM install, this will also be fixed - it exists but not as a neat pdf or so

Great. A working OEM install option will help to spread Mint.
I talked to some owners of small local computer stores last week and all of them were very interested in installing Mint as a userfriendly alternative to Win. An OEM installation is all they need (well, some kind of support too, but that's something i'm able to provide locally ;) ).

Nice work, Clem and team! I'm downloading Helena as we speak, and look forward to trying it out. I'm sampled other distros of late, but keep coming back to Mint! DR

Helena's great...it works well.
I'm running mint on a virtual machine, and I'm glad Helena works great on it.
When I installed 7, it was a bit screwy.
8 is working fine though! :)

Does Helena offer any way to install besides a CD? And besides getting the CD onto a flash drive, heh.

I have a pair of older laptops who do not have working optical media drives and cannot boot to flash drives. I *might* be able to read a CD for a little bit of time -- so, if there's a mini installer that can download the rest -- and I definitely can do a PXE install, but last I looked Mint 7 did not have a way to do a PXE install.

Any hope for this noob, or am I stuck in Ubuntu?

Another great release! Nice. Thanks for your team's efforts Clem!
I particularly do not like the FRESH logo but replacing it with the boot LINUXMINT wallpaper suits my tastes just fine... so other than that minor detail, the install was definitely faster... Helena and I are gonna be friends for the next season!

Hi and Thanks for the new release!

I can't wait for 64 bit to be released as I would like to use the full potential of my puter!

Looking forward to 64!

Take Care

EDIT: I really don't think people should be doing an upgrade. I had numerous problems with that myself.
If you do a clean install, I think you will be better off for the majority. just my thoughts.

After I did a clean install, everything is running great! however, I do not use wifi anymore as I find it to be
crap and always had problems with it on Linux AND windows. So I switched to a solid connection and do
not regret it. If you have to move around a lot, you may want to upgrade your wifi card (even in your laptop).
In many laptops, the wifi IS a card that CAN be upgraded.

Peace! 8)

I installed Mint 8 last night and I am loving the fact that, unlike karmic koala, all the codecs and everything are automatically installed. That is such a pain with karmic because many times when I would download one plugin or codec, others I needed would be removed and here I'd go again. Lol. Anyway, can you tell me how your changed the login screen? I don't like that logo either but I can't figure out how to do it. Thanks so much.

Wow, my installation went very smoothly and have had no issues at all. I hope you can get it worked out. It is the best distro I have ever used.

@ stuff
Your user name is inappropriate
And yes there is a lot of problems with Helena inherited from Ubuntu
We did not get rid of as many bugs as we would wish - that's sad but true

@stuff

Fortunately the Mint team is usually excellent at straightening out bugs, missing pieces and issues before Ubuntu gets around to it. So chances are, your issues and more will be taken care of here before Ubuntu will. In my experience that's pretty much been the case.
