Mint on a Server: it works ...

Post by scorp123 »

as a follow-up to the recent "Mint Server" discussion I thought I give it a try. Although this is a 64-bit system and Mint is only 32-bit, I wanted to see if it can handle the professional hardware here. Short answer: Yes it can. We'd just need a 64-bit kernel to take full advantage of the CPU. But the 32-bit kernel was running OK too.

The machine here is a SUN "SunFire" X4200 server with 16 GB RAM.

Here a few bits from various commands ...

That last bit shows the shortcomings of a 32-bit kernel: The system in question has 16 GB RAM and not just 4 GB ... but 4 GB are the limits the standard kernel in "Mint" seems to be able to handle.

Other than that all the hardware seems to work tip top here. I am writing this very posting from the Live CD running on the one X4200 I just tested.

Just thought I let you know

NIce :)

On a standard PC you don't even have that much. The Linux kernel splits the 4 GB virtual address space of a process in two parts: 3 GB for you and 1 GB for the kernel. In addition to this the motherboard needs an address space for PCI etc of about 500 MB (learned this in the Windows world, but as this is hardware it should be the same for Linux) so the top 500 MB are inaccesible.
Thought it's worth mentioning so no one is anticipating a usable 4 GB :)

With a proper 64-bit OS (e.g. Ubuntu Server 7.04, 64-bit edition) I get the full 16 GB the system has. The only thing really missing here are two decent PCI-X graphics cards (there are two PCI-X slots here); the on-board ATI Rage XL sucks big time for FPS games :D

I wonder what the framerate would be e.g. with UT2004 ?? With those four Dual-Core AMD-64 CPU's and two decent graphics cards working together via SLI ... I can imagine that the framerate would be pretty awesome
