bcm43xx NetworkManager regression in Feisty / Cassandra

Postby rahim on Fri Jun 15, 2007 12:02 am

Hello all,

Ubuntu 7.04 has a major regression related to the bcm43xx card and NetworkManager. Unfortunately it also found its way into Cassandra. I filed a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/110459 It's filed against Kubuntu, but it doesn't matter which variant- the NetworkManager daemon doesn't work with my bcm43xx card. It worked almost perfectly before in 6.10 and also in Linux Mint KDE 2.2.

Basically the problem is that the NetworkManager just hangs while trying to connect. Sometimes if I unload/reload the driver or disable/enable the WiFI radio I can coax it into connecting, but it's very unpredictable. Somewhere I read that this seems to be the case only when the connection is open, without encryption, as is the case with me. Ubuntu is not doing anything about the bug. I hope maybe somebody here has a solution for Cassandra?

Thanks a lot!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

we don't have resources to fix that kind of bug.

BTW that is not the only downgrade bug that has come to ubuntu 7.04 and its variants. :(

Well, I figure there might be some sort of workaround that somebody has figured out. It doesn't necessarily require you to patch the source code or anything. There are millions of bcm43xx users, and I haven't seen many complaints about the problem I mentioned, so maybe I have something misconfigured.... Thanks!

I've seen some reports of serious problems where bcm43xx is mentioned but not the culprit.
If I'm not totally wrong it's supported by ndiswrapper...

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

It's actually the same if I use ndiswrapper or the native bcm43xx driver. It sees the available networks fine. It tries to connect, gets close, but fails. If I use Wicd to connect instead of NetworkManager, it works perfectly. I would just use Wicd, but the tray applet is poor, and it doesn't notify apps like Gaim of network status changes, so they have connection problems. But again, this has to be fixable, because it worked perfectly in 6.10. If Linux Mint can get this fixed, you will be famous. Ubuntu doesn't give two cents.
