This is the most difficult point in the install (the second most difficult is when grub is to be installed) but normally creating the partitions first in gparted solves the problem
Do I understand you right that you see the part where you are to select a partition to install but there are no partitions there?
Also please post your lspci and tell us what hdds and optical units (as exactly as you can, please) you have
