Problems getting Beryl to run

Post by crossfire139 »

I already have Mint and Beryl installed and running on one machine but attempts to replicate it on another machine have so far been a failure.
The new machine is:
Asus A7N266-VM Mobo (has GeForce2 integrated GPU)
GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x video card

Mint has installed fine and the Nvidia driver has been installed using Envy.
The Nvidia driver is acknowledged in the Restricted Drivers Manager as installed and in use.
Beryl however, won't run.
It is setup to load at startup and for the splash logo to appear.
At startup no splash appears but the icon appears in the taskbar.
Right clicking the Beryl icon shows that the window manager is Metacity.
Trying to change to Beryl makes the display blink a few times then revert to Metacity.
Trying to change themes with Emerald results in no change.
I've been searching forums and trying all manner of things with no luck.
Hope someone can help

If you have a CRT monitor the horizontal sync is a bit low - else it's as it should.
You have the magic words, like "AddARGBGLXVisuals" so it really should work. The onboard video does not seem to interfere.
However you may learn something from the wiki:
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... Linux_Mint
Of course Beryl is installed in Cassandra
There is also a sticky howto
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1036
The configuration tips in these two are valid. See if they help - if not post back and we'll have to ponder a bit more

No luck so far.
I suspect the problem is an incompatibility of this particular mobo with the nvidia drivers.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr ... 332&page=6

While the driver seems to have installed OK and the display is stable, I don't think it is working fully ie. no 3D.
Might be time to retire the mobo?
I'd still be grateful for any help or advice to try to solve this.

Hi crossfire139,
there is one thing that comes to my mind, i think you have added to many lines to your xorg, in the section Device, just leave this one:
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

here is that section of my xorg:

Section "Device"
Identifier "nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7900 GS]"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

EndSection

hope that fix it. :)

Thanks but tried that with no luck.

Noticed that Envy and Automatix both load nvidia driver 9631.
Downloaded the latest one (9639) and tried that but it just makes x crash
