Mint freezes when accessing cd drive

Post by flammenwurfer »

First off, I'm running linuxmint 2.2 kde on a Lenovo 3000 N100 with intel gma950 video.

The problem is, everytime i try to access a cd in my cd-rom drive linuxmint completely freezes. Then I have to hold down the power button to shut it off and then turn it back on. I'm fairly certain it's not a hardware problem with the drive, because livecds work fine.

So when you boot from a cd you're OK but when you try to use a CD from within an installed Mint you're not?
These total lockups (if that's a word :)) are a pain....
The reason is that your system uses all its resources when it tries to start the CD, but why this happens I don't know
Have the system monitor open when you try to open a CD - this may produce a lead to what's causing your problems

open a terminal and use the top command to monitor the system when you open the cdrom.

Hmm.. ok. So just type "top" in the terminal?

I'll try that when I get home. Thanks for the tip guys. I'll report back when/if I get any clues. Thanks again.

Ok, I tried it and I'm not sure what I'm looking for in top. When it froze up the only thing that looked possibly out of the ordinary was the section that said...
Cpu(s) 99.3%id

There other numbers along with it under Cpu that were normal 0.3%iw bla bla etc.

that means the cpu was 99% idle.

so is it any type of cd that kills mint? music, data...

the only other thing i can think of is if it is using the wrong driver or mode for the CDROM.

How would I go about checking which driver it's using, and which one it's supposed to use?

to see what kernel modules (drivers) are loaded:

sudo lsmod

and to see the hardware

sudo lspci
