how risky is it to upgrade?
i want to upgrade from gloria to helena but i want to keep my settings and data. Normally i would do a fresh install but im feeling pretty lazy to transfer all my data to my laptop and transfer it back, then redo all my settings. So how risky is it? Would you recommend it?

I can only speak from personal experience, but I upgraded
from Mint 7 to Mint 8 main using this guide

and everything went perfectly.I used the GUI method.
I backed up my home directory first just in case.
Follow the instructions to the letter and you should be fine.
It does not upgrade you to Grub2 so your existing Grub
will be intact after the upgrade, it will just
have Helena instead of Gloria.
I initially was not going to upgrade and was going
to wait for the next LTS but an update to Gloria caused
me stability issues that disappeared after the
upgrade to Mint 8.
All your settings and data will remain intact.

DON´T DO IT!!
Linux Mint 7 was fine...
the new LINUX MINT 8 isn´t what you like, if you think about Linux.
New, fat, slow, and GRUB 2 - Problems...
it´s not the user-friendly linux-system like Linux Mint 7
