Either one, if they work (see what works)
--unless you need the more flexible wicd options wired /wireless connecting
Is that an option on that poll ?

You should talk to the developers for changes in wicd.DrHu wrote:Either one, if they work (see what works)

There has been many changes in the latest version of Wicd.
You should test the latest version to see if it still works for you.
I have seen posts were people needed Network Manger installed so they could connect.
They then skipped over installing Xfce CE since it wouldn't work for them.
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
Network Manager works best for me ... "outta the box"
I previously, couldn't make Wicd work.
Xubutnu has Network Manager by default, seems to work well for them?

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
Previously ... LinuxMint-7 (Main) was released to RC just a few days after the Final release of Ubuntu 9.04.
And the final public release shortly thereafter.
Whereas, LinuxMint-7 Xfce CE was released a few months after Gloria was first released.
I know the Mint-Xfce Team is hard at work, already ... and will have another great Xfce edition to add to LinuxMInt-8.
Do you have a 'ballpark' idea of when (approximately, roughly) we can expect the Helena-Xfce CE?
I know it will be ready ... when it's finished. But, I was just wondering? Weeks? Months?

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
vrkalak, there is no set time on releases. merlwiz79 volunteers his time and efforts to build the Xfce CE. merlwiz79 builds the highest quality release with the highest level of usability in mind, this takes time. Many of the tools in the Xfce CE are built and maintained by merlwiz79 and he makes modifications where necessary to make these tool work in each release. merlwiz79 also maintains win4min and that goes in all our releases.
There is a lot to building a Mint CE and a lot of testing that takes place before it is released to the community. I hope you understand why we do not have a set release date for our releases. All of us want you to have the best system humanly possible.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
exploder: I know these things and I appreciate everything the Mint Team does. Thank you for the quick reply.
I was just curious and looking for a rough estimate. I am quite happy with Gloria/Xfce edition and am looking forward to Helena.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
I am also wondering when there might be a release? Exactly like Vrkalak, I do not request a precise date, just some estimate. We dont demand a perfect release schedule, just a very rough estimate on when it possibly might be released? Or just updates where the project is right now?
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not writing this to stress you or try to make you work harder. We all know that you already work hard and probably in your spare time with no payment for your effort, and Im very grateful for that, thank you! But its no more than natural that many people are wondering about the next release, especially during days like this with a fresh new Ubuntu-version out with a lot of new goodies.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
My two cents/wishes:
I want to see all drives/partitions in Xfce like in Gnome/Mint Main. Without doing any mounting/embedding by hand.
In the menu: A hint/popup about the apps purpose. Btw: I really hate the scrolling/clicking-too-much in MintGnome and KDE menues. A menu has to be straight forward like in Xfce (Fluxbox too; don't call me Jehova (Monty Python, just to be sure, hehe...) but also Windows in ALL versions ), noone should do some traveling/scrolling to start any application.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
I second that. It would make everything easier. Something like "My computer" on Windows, not exactly like it, but some kind of computer-centre from which there'd be a link to the settings, drives, webcams, printers, scanners etc. - just so a person could "see" what he actually has connected to PC. It would be very lovely feature that would be very helpful and make the system even easier. Preinstalled apps to control scanners and webcams would be great to. It's probably all that I would like to see, I hope you will read my tip. And would also like to read any estimated date of Helena XFCE, because it's the best distro ever with everything set on the best desktop environment which combines speed and ease of use. With the Mint addons, it's the easiest system I have ever used. Can't wait to have it all new, shiny and up to datethx1138 wrote:My two cents/wishes:

I adore your work and wish you all best. Hope you'll settle everything and have some time to work on Helena XFCE CE.
Good luck!
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development
1. Network Manager--I would prefer to see network manager by default. I love wicd to death but I need vpn support to access my network at work. That said, I could always uninstall wicd and go with network manager. It's not a huge deal but something to think about.merlwiz79 wrote: Poll

Post any suggestions here for Linux Mint 8 Helena Xfce CE.
2. Here's a suggestion...make it light on resources! Xubuntu is getting a little bloaty on my netbook and I'd love to move back to mint (need the improved intel drivers in 9.10 for the time being).
3. Thanks for doing such a great job with your CE and taking time to ask for our input. Many of us appreciate your work and look forward to the next release.
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 16)
Sorry for the delays in development.
My wife is having jaw problems.
They have given here stronger meds and now I have to driver her to work.
She also has many appointments and might need to get a 3rd opinion about her jaw.
Also I had to RMA one of my hard drives.
I also formatted my hard drive with all the OSes on it.
I then reinstalled all the OSes and made it easier to work on Xfce CE.
I won't be able to get mintdisk to work.
The new GDM has broken it.
I also have to find a way to make Ctrl+Alt+Backspace work again.
Xfce doesn't have a setting for it and the only way I can get it to work is a command.
The command needs to be ran after every login.
I then just have to update a few packages and upload them to my repo.
Then I can work on the ISO.
I hope to have one for testing soon.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 16)
merlwiz79: Thanks for the Mint-Xfce CE update.
Do what you need to do ... take care of your wife and yourself.
Work on the iso. when you can.
We'll wait. No problem. Helena has already given us much to do.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 16)
Merlwiz79 - you don't have to hurry, family should be beyond everything.
I have one idea for XFCE CE Edition. There should be Wine submenu with another submenu for wine programs. Now all wine programs going to Others submenu I have created Menu submenu in file /etc/xdg/menus/xfce....
Now it (menu) is look like this:
Lines added to menu file:
I know that there shouldn't be <OnlyUnallocated/, but when I have added category
Programs not showing, so I decided to add there unallocated files - and it works.
What do you think about add this to menu?
Regards
P.S.
Sorry for my English.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 29)
I have been falling behind in a lot of other things and been working on them during the day.
I then work on Xfce CE at night.
So far things have been coming along ok.
I have some packages in the repo and am working on adding the rest.
I hope to have them all in by the end of this week.
Then I will start working on the ISO next week.
To watch my progress you can look at the Xfce CE repo here.
I cannot make a 64bit version as I don't have the computer to do so or the money to build one.

Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 29)
The CTRL+ALT+Backspace function was removed by the xorg people because they say too many people hit it by mistake. The command is now ALT+SYSRQ+K to close the x-server.
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 29)
Yes but you can add it back and is in the other editions.
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 29)
Thank you very much for your time; I'm using a (my own way) mintified Xubuntu and download and install emerald-themes, firefox-defaults-xfce and nimbus-icon-theme. I'm glad to see that address bar looks good. There is a problem with dark themes and firefox defaults settings I think. Same with Thunderbird.merlwiz79 wrote:To watch my progress you can look at the Xfce CE repo here.
Again, thanks for your work. We will be awaiting.
(sorry my english, it comes from a non bilingual chilean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chile)
Re: Helena Xfce CE Development(updated Dec 29)
Hi merlwiz79, thank you for all of your hard work and determination! My favorite Linux of all time for ease of use, efficiency, and elegance has been Linux Mint 7 XFCE CE! I have tried Helena, but I can't say I am very impressed, it's good, but I like XFCE.
I can beta test once you have an iso.
All the best,
