Mine still shows 2.6.31.14. As long as I don't watch flash videos it will be a while before it freezes. Not sure if flash ads have similar effect.

btw...
4 days and no hangs after I added a dedicated NVIDIA card to replace (surplant) the integrated 9100 NVIDIA.
My KVM even works like a charm. Kernel? NVIDIA chip? Integrated vs. Dedicated? I don't know.

Folks,
Not sure if it's related, but Thunderbird has frozen up on me. I'm trying to format it for Hotmail and it just froze. The whole system works except TB which is non-responsive. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks. Is there anything like ctl-alt-del that will allow me to shut down TB w/o restarting the system?

Gnome comes with Control Alt Backspace to kill misbehaving apps but in Mint it's disabled by default. There's a thread somewhere on how to enable it but I don't know how off the top of my head.

MY pc lock up after unknown time with the old kernel and the new kernel 2.6.32-020632 did not help, this was the only thing that worked for me.

Freeze Fix: add "acpi=off" to kernel line of "gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" IF you get "system hail" at shut down like I did. What are you to do?
System halt fix: add "apm power_off=1" to "sudo gedit /etc/modules". Put on its own line.

Now save and reboot, worked for me, no freezing and PC shuts down all the way.

IF you need to make you grub change permanent, as in survive upgrade read here and go to part 2.2: http://grumpymole.blogspot.com/2007/05/ ... eters.html

Two weeks, no hangs...
My setup was the HP Pavilion, running Linux Mint 8 hooked up to a kvm switch which was connected to an XP box.
I had tried other grub settings, but nothing worked until I got a dedicated card.

Interestingly enough, when running XP in a VM in Mint then switching the kvm to the real XP box, the keyboard and mouse never came back. Again, this hasn't happened since I got the dedicated card.

Is this a dedicated video card or integrated?

I am seeing the system hangs - mouse keeps working but that's it. The recovery process I need to use is very annoying.

I reboot and have to go to the "recovery" mode. Then after I go through that, I select to drop down to the root prompt. From the command line I just type "startx". Everything starts up just fine, but I get the default desktop that you get with the install. Once on the desktop I select menu->logout->restart. I'm then able to boot directly into Helena and my customized desktop comes up.

Any other process I've tried has resulted in the black screen with no response after the LM mint leaf logo during the boot up process. Not sure if anyone else's recovery process is more graceful.

I have an old Dell Dimension with an integrated video Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01).

I'm also running logitech wireless keyboard and Mouse.

Current kernel 2.6.31-17 will look into upgrading it in the near future.

Hoping to get this stable enough to get on the rest of the family's laptops.

Hello camjam,
I too have the same situation. I have the On-board graphics card, that is the 82845 G/GL.
Upgrading to kernel 2.6.32_ did not help.
This problem is also present in other Linux distributions that are based on Ubuntu 9.10

Well, I've given up!
Good luck

I have only been using Linux for a few days but have tried about a dozen different distros with the same results. They all freeze on my computer, if you can get them installed, and flash video has problems. I have an Intel d845glva motherboard with 82845GL graphics, 1.7ghz celeron, and 1gig of ram. I have the newest bios for my motherboard. I have been doing clean installs and not dual booting. I have removed Compiz and turned a lot of stuff off but still no luck. At first, I thought it was the bios settings but I have tried every available combination and my computer still freezes at various times. Sometimes while surfing the net, sometimes as soon as the OS starts up. I thought my hardware might be too old (2002) so I tried Puppy Linux and Xubuntu but they also have issues on my system and don't play flash video very well.

Sometimes flash (Youtube) video works fine for about 45-60 seconds and then freezes until I move the mouse. Then the video runs really slow, then back to normal, then super slow motion. Hit full screen and be prepared to freeze for sure. I have changed the video driver and installed the different flash plug-ins but it still didn't help. I don't know if it is my hardware, bios settings, or Linux. Linux Mint seems pretty cool if I could fix the couple of issues I'm having, stop locking up and play flash video better.

Do you have an integrated video card? My freezes went away when I put a dedicated video card in.

Hi everyone,

I would like to add my own story. I have LM 8 Helena installed.

Core 2 Duo, 3.33 Ghz
4 GB RAM
P5Q Deluxe Motherboard
GeForce GTX 260 (drivers version 185)

In my case, the freezes occur mostly when viewing videos or surfing with Firefox. Switching to Opera didn't do anything. I tried to remove wallpaper-tray from the Gnome panel, no changes. I have installed the kernel 2.6.32-02063203-generic, but no luck. At turned off Compiz and the freezes diminished greatly, but... my Linux experience is marred without it.

I also very recently installed Fluxbox on an old P3. No freeze what soever, although I haven't use it long enough.

I hope the info I gave can be of help.

That is a stumper.... Have you tried the drivers off Nividia's site?
In my case I had a quad core and an integrated video chip. 1 problem was (I think) the cpufreq. Earlier Debian/Ubuntu kernels didn't co-operate to well with them. I also spent ~$40 to get a graphics card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

And my freezes went away.

I'm running an HP Pavilion a6720y.

I also had freezes on a Dell Optiplex 760 until I updated the kernel and added a card.

This was Ubunutu Mint 7/ and Ubunutu Jaunty.

Hi hinto,

I did as you did. I stroll around the net for how to update the Nvidia drivers. I manage to made the install but it said my GCC compiler wasn't the same version as the install file. I wanted to cancel the thing, but I accidently press the wrong button and begun the installation . After recovering from my oh cr*p moment, it install perfectly well (at least I think it did). It still says version 185 on Hardware drivers, but on the profiler manager says version 193.53.

Crossing my fingers now!

I had mine today when I blew away a vm...
Apparently I had a softlink to it from another computer (say, A), and my real vmdsk files were on B. (So A linked to B). I had tweaked my vm and I was going to copy it, so I was going to free up room on B and deleted it (the VM) which deleted the original;)

BTW... hope the drivers work out. It's too bad Linux get's a "bad name" when it's the harware manufacturers are late coming to the game...
