Partition error in need of assistance

Post by internetSurfer »

I recently downloaded Linux Mint 8, codename "Helena" and did an install
in a dual boot environment (+Win XP). Installation went fine and I did
the auto install. I am able to boot up in both OS's without any problem.
The issue is I would like to use Linux Mint 6 instead of 8.

When I use my partition tools (Gparted livecd && Partion Pro Magic (Hiren's boot cd))
there are no partitions visible and I am getting all sorts of critical errors.

I want to fix my HD and fix the partition error and get Mint 6 installed.
I cannot afford to lose my XP install.

Any help greatly appreciated.

How old is your gparted cd? Helena now use ext4 by default, an old copy of gparted wouldn't understand it. Just use the Helena livecd, there's an updated gparted on there.

Once you can edit the partitions, just delete the ext4 partition and install mint6 to that. Make sure you install grub to the MBR to overwrite the grub2 left over by Helena.

Thank you for the feedback.

I agree with your theory on the ext4 file system and lack of support on
my tools that is causing the error. I will update them A.S.A.P. :D

Gparted is available from the Helena Live CD menu.
