There was a forum post in Oct about this issue, but i have not been able to resolve.
This is the issue: After successful login, screen resolution is to high, so i change display setting to 1152x864 most comfortable viewing for me. After log out or shutdown, system reverts back to the previous screen resolution.

This time would not let me back, so i sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bckp /etc/X11/xorg.conf and screen locked, so rebooted and all ok again. All conf changes were done with sudo using mousepad. But where to from here?
I read for 1 whole day at various forums, from my understanding (correct me if im wrong) the driver is default for auto conf, here i possibly see the reason, cannot manual change the file just overide?
Yet, in setting change box shows all resolutions capable for aspect ratio of my monitor. I do not understand, because it is saying these resolutions available, yet refuse other than highest.
Anyone care for more suggestion would be appreciated.

Search for modelines and my user name and you'll find several examples of a working xorg.conf
You have to use modelines too to get it to work (at lest I think so, and it generally works)

I did what you said and found the modeline suitable for my display (the one i wanted) and all works fine, but i also added some others supposedly all suitable for 2005FTW wide monitor. Check out my new xorg.conf. But what surprises me here is that it boots (continually) to 1280x800. It will not save any other resolution that i choose. Why? It does not really matter as that resolution is fine for me, and i could just enter the modeline that suits, but that is not the point here.

Modelines work, but it's a complete mystery to me why the different systems sometimes decides that it's just one resolution that is saved
If you use a Radeon card and the restricted driver I can understand it
I don't see the graphics card mentioned, but if you have a Radeon and fglrx xorg.conf is ignored and you have to do
This way the amdpcsdb file is changed so the driver uses the new values

For your information, the card is an intel. Not to worry, i have downloaded mint 8 gnome version and successfully installed, this version HAS successfully determined my Dell widescreen monitor, giving me 2 correct resolution choices 16:10, and allowing a save on either.
Though, for some reason it has also given me choices of "other" aspect ratio's, eg: 4:3 which DO NOT position correctly for this monitor.
Just the same, mint 8 certainly is a "mean machine". Im impressed!
