Broken packages with no obvious solution
Hi guys,
I wanted to install more recent version of Wine (I think it's still beta) which isn't in repository so I added new repository as stated here: http://www.winehq.org/download/deb . I uninstalled previous Wine (1.0.1) and tried to install one from new repository (1.2.x) it complained about some dependency problem (wine1.2) and didnt install anything, after which I installed wine1.2 with not problem but still couldn't install wine (which "depends" on it). I removed everything about the Wine and wanted to update using mintUpdate (icon in notification area). I got the following: "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first." At console while trying to install Wine it reported at the end: "E: Broken packages" but that's all, it didn't state what package is making problems. Last what I did (well I was trying advices in many posts I found on google with no success at all) was to try using "Edit -> Fix broken packages" in Synaptic but nothing happened ("Apply" button was still grayed out). I removed repository I added in rep list, reloaded packages list but still I cannot update using "mintUpdate" (it reports the same error which I cannot fix).
It's really frustrating, I returned to Linux after some time but after 4-5 days of using its "broken" at least package system.
Can someone please give me some advice on how to fix this problem or should I reinstall LinuxMint

Re: Broken packages with no obvious solution
Run these commands in terminal[Menu-->Terminal]
Run dpkg manually
Then run this to fix the broken install
Then update your package list
Then run this to clean up any partial packages
Then run this to clean up the apt cache
Then run this to clean up any unneeded dependencies
Let me know how it works out

After these commands I tried to update packages using "mintUpdate" in notification area and it still reports: "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first."
Re: Broken packages with no obvious solution
Maybe the logs can tell us something.
Run these commands in terminal[Menu-->Terminal]
and post the logs here
Since your problem started with wine perhaps we can do a forced remove of it.

Re: Broken packages with no obvious solution
Did you try to remove wine?
If that doesn't work try this command
If that doesn't do it try this
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove --purge wine
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get --reinstall install wine
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq wine

Re: Broken packages with no obvious solution
I am confused now.
Where are you getting this message about broken packages?
When you ran update from the command line it updated successfully.
Below is the output you posted.
Is there a specific package you are attempting to install that is causing
this error, because as far as I can see you don't have a broken system,
because it is updating and I see no errors in any of the commands you ran.
I must be missing something, so could you please illuminate for me.
thanks
mick
PS
Or are you just having an issue with the Mint update manager GUI?

Re: Broken packages with no obvious solution
Well it seems it's fixed now.
Problem was like I said, when I tried to update my system by using "mintUpdate" (Mint update manager GUI), it was stubbornly reporting that there are broken packages. I went to Synaptic to upgrade packages manually that were supposed to be updated with "mintUpdate", I upgraded it and problem is gone, at least for now. Program (package) that was stuck was "Deluge" and it's dependencies.
Still, when I add new repository from WinHQ and try to install Wine it says that wine needs to remove Wine1.2 but then it fails installation because it depends on it, but I guess this contradictory problem is a different kind of problem.
If I hadn't fixed this I would probably forget about LinuxMint for some time, I simply don't have so much time to tackle basic desktop problems like this one (installing/uninstalling programs).
Thanks for all your effort Mick.
