VMware tools will not install

You need to have the kernel sources installed + plus the gcc C compiler. There is a package called build-essential which will auto-install all the needed dependencies. The rest can be found on VMware.com's forums and knowledge base: You need to compile a few kernel modules or else the VMware tools will be unable to run.

use the synaptic GUI and search or apt-get to install it.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential

You need to locate the section about installing VMWare and read up on it,

I don't think you understand, you need build-essential and the kernel headers for Mint in order to compile the modules necessary to install VMWare tools.
