Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 Released

Since this is the first exposure I have to Ubuntu Tweak, what is it and why do I need it?

You don't need it, all it does is allow easy (subjective) configuration from a single app of some elements of the system and DE that may be otherwise hidden and/or more difficult to change. Think TweakXP for windows

Got it working by adding it to my sources.list, and adding the key with the terminal. Tested it out, and found a couple little options that make my computer using experience ever so slightly better.

There are some very useful things that you might want to change/add such. I find the nautilus scripts and the list of third party repos very useful.

What does Ubuntu Tweak do?

Ubuntu Tweak is an application designed to config Ubuntu easier for everyone.

  i realise what the app is for, but, when one says tweaking the system, its understood by the majority that its specifically designed to actually tweak system performance - very much like the ones found for xp i.e. tuneup utilities, TweakXp etc etc
  
  you see, these programs found for xp and titled TWEAK, they are in fact programs that make the system perform better and actually makes the system quicker. where as this Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 dose frankly F***All in regards to tweaking up the system to perform better and all it seems useful for is (only naming a couple of things) like changing afew theme layouts, custom title fields and download apps you desire (not much of a tweak IMHO) - as you can see alot of people in these forums are actually asking whether there is such an TWEAKING program for ubuntu to make it alot more snappier then what it is.

To change slightly, usually in reference to a value.

It has nothing to do with performance whatsoever. Just because 'the majority' think that's what it means, doesn't make it so.

'The majority' also only run Microsoft Windows - by your logic that's grounds enough for us all to switch back.

• lol, cheers for the enlightenment rob2uk, and yes, its getting closer by the week to revert back to windows as each new release of ubuntu seems to feel more bloated and less responsive and the networking side of things just never seem to improve unless there is a better distro to try, ill be game to experiment

Ubuntu Tweak is an invaluable tool for the new user.

For the Linux adept there is not much to be gained from it's
installation since everything you can do in Ubuntu Tweak you can do
from the CLI or by editing configuration files.

However, if you are new to the game it's a great way
to configure hidden settings and easily install popular software.

For the neophyte it makes it simple to configure software sources
or change desktop settings or icons and many other little tweaks.

I highly recommend it to anyone new to Mint or Ubuntu
or the Linux OS in general.

(And of course, the beauty of Linux is, if you don't want it or need it, don't install it)

Hey, before you jump ship back to Windows give Mepis 8.x a shot.

It's based on Debian stable and features the KDE 3.5 desktop.

It looks more like Windows than Windows does (a little Yogi Berra-ism there).

Except of course it's extremely stable.
