No sound on divx avi or flv only sistem sounds [solved]

Postby adrian.ccs on Fri Sep 11, 2009 5:03 am

Hello

I can't hear any of the flv or divx movies that I stream or got stored on my computer. I've tried building the OSS also using pulse audio. Im using a HP tx2z and before I got an update I could use divx and flv files normally could somebody tellme what I should do now?

Hi Adrian!

What is your sound card?

lspci | grep audio

Could you send me some examples of those divx and flv?

You may archive them with 7-Zip

EXAMPLE:

mumu.avi (17MB, for example)

create archive:

7z a -t7z mumu.avi.7z -v5m mumu.avi

unzip:

7z x mumu.avi.7z.001

NOTE: 7-Zip should be already installed on your box, if not, install it with Synaptic.

On Terminal:

man 7z

thanks Igor,

the command lspci | grep audio did not showed anything,

I can not play mp3 but I can use the online radios and youtube and the error sounds of the OS.

Anyways I've got the 64 bit version of linux mint, and for the hardware,
I used aplay -l and ispci -v and this is what Ive got:

Hi Adrian!

adrian@adrian-laptop ~ $ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:217: no soundcards found...

This may actually mean that you have not a proper ALSA driver for your sound card.
In Linux, there are ALSA drivers and OSS4 drivers for sound cards, and nothing more, as far as I know.

To fix ALSA, you may try the magic script (it is now maintained by soundcheck)
ALSA Upgrade Script
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810

*************************************************************
It makes sense to try OSS4
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

Hints:
1. Compile OSS4 from Mercurial
2. When you run install command:

sudo dpkg -i oss*.deb

it will tell you which soundcards are detected.

You may better install another Mint 7 in dual boot on the same box (10GB is enough),
and make experiments there.

Read this story:
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=32173

Good luck!

To find out, which drivers (for soundcards) are loaded
type these commands on terminal:

lsmod | grep snd

lsmod | grep oss

INFO:

"lsmod | grep snd" may show ALSA drivers

"lsmod | grep oss" may show OSS drivers (if OSS4 is installed). It may also show ALSA drivers (alsa emulation of oss)

IMPORTANT: you cannot have ALSA and OSS4 simultaneously. They do not like each other.

!!! Kernel driver in use: oss_hdaudio

oss_hdaudio is OSS4 driver!!!

It might be conflicting drivers.
OSS4 and ALSA do not like each other.

It was such case on Ubuntu forum, as I remember.

Or do you have OSS4 already installed?

To make things clear, install another Mint7 in dual boot on the same box.
Then compile OSS4 from Mercurial following this howto:

If you have OSS4 already installed,
this command may output an interesting info:

ossinfo -v3

This command may play sounds:

osstest

And this command may output info (on terminal):

ossmix

O.K.
This is what you told us:
"I can't hear any of the flv or divx movies that I stream or got stored on my computer. I've tried building the OSS also using pulse audio. Im using a HP tx2z and before I got an update I could use divx and flv files normally could somebody tellme what I should do now?"
"I can not play mp3 but I can use the online radios and youtube and the error sounds of the OS."

QUESTIONS:

1. Do you have PulseAudio installed or not?
2. If you have OSS4, how did you install it?
3. Have you tried to play your mp3s with VLC ?
4. Can you play mp3s from "Security Now" with VLC?

sudo apt-get install vlc

I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this has been asked loads of times before. I'm currently in the process of encoding my flv's into divx's with handbrake. but i got no satisfactory reasults, the output image is too vague, I donot know what the problem is.
Anybody care to shed light on this?
