Installing Debian 5.0.3 Netinst

Post by Acid_1 »

As the title says, that's what I'm doing in a VM. Anyone else try it before? How do you feel on Debian vs Ubuntu vs Mint?

Hi

Personally I really like Debian 5.03. It's an extremely stable distro.
I am using the KDE version.

I have not done the net install and would not recommend it unless you
know exactly which packages you wish to install. The base install it refers
to does not include a desktop, so the download will be as large as
just downloading the standard CD version.

You only need CD1 of Debian to do a complete install. The other CD's
or DVD's are all the additional packages and you do not need them.

debian-504-i386-CD-1.iso is the Gnome desktop version
debian-504-i386-kde-CD-1.iso is the KDE version.

You can download them here.

I updated to Lenny 5.0.4 on Saturday when it was available on the mirrors. I have done the netinstall a few times with Etch, Lenny, and Squeeze when on a fast broadband connection. I prefer the DVD1 install since I only use GNOME. If you select "Desktop" in tasksel (it is usually already selected in the netinstall, CD1, and DVD1), you will get the full GNOME environment. I have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed on different machines. If you want solid, stable, and reliable, you run with Debian Lenny.

I downloaded and installed Debian 5.0.3 Lenny as a net-install, then added the 'testing' repositories.

Then, converted the desktop to using purely Xfce with no Gnome dependencies. :P Very fast!! I love Xfce.

I still use it as one of the 3 distros on my PC. And because it's based on Debian testing ... I keep it 'bleeding edge' updated with everything.
