Installing Hardware Drivers on Linux Mint 7

Hi,

I recently installed Mint 7 KDE and tried to install the drivers ( http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... ng=English )for my Radeon 9700 card, sadly when I try to run that programm I get that:

Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.28-11-generic; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro
Can someone help me figuring out what is happening here?

Welcome to the joys of Mint!

You said you have just installed Mint "7." Since the current version is Mint 8, why not download and try that first?! This also may be why the Radeon driver is not working for that older Mint version?

Well I started with Mint 8 and had even more graphic related problems. As far as I understand the situation arround ATI drivers, distros that are based on Karmic have a problem with certain older Radeon cards while distros that are based on Jaunty should work fine. That is why I went from 8 to 7 in the first place ( see also here - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1377266 ).

Try the open source Radeon drivers first to get a display and then play around with the setup for the binary drivers (ATI)
