Lots of Questions

Post by satya164 »

Hi. I'm new to Linux. I have windows 7 and Linux Mint 8 in my Dell Inspiron 1545. But after getting Mint, I just loved it. I had got Linux Mint 7 Gloria from one of my friends. Then I didn't know anything about Linux. I got Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora and Linux Mint 8 from Magazines. After trying all these, now I have Linux Mint 8 as default OS in my laptop. I have downloaded KDE through synaptic. So my questions are,

1. Is there a KDE version of Mint Menu and can I get the default splash screen, wallpaper and theme of KDE release? The default KDE launcher is not good as Mint Menu.
2. I can connect to net with my cells EDGE connection in Gnome, but not in KDE. What can be the problem? It also happened in Kubuntu.
3. How can I set Dolphin my default file manager in Gnome?
4. I have some .tar.bz2 packages of Firefox, Blender etc and also .tar.gz of some. How can I compile them to make .deb files? Or install them?
5. In Fedora 12 KDE, when I tap on touchpad, nothing happens. What can be the reason and solution?
6. Is it possible to install media codecs and microsoft ttf fonts offline?
7. Please suggest some good low memory 2D and 3D games. Like World of Goo and Devil May Cry.

Please understand that here in India, bandwith matters a lot. I get only 10kbps download speed with my EDGE connection. So please try to solve with least internet. And I said Devil May Cry like games, but no low memory game will be of such high quality. So I meant the theme should be like it. I liked graphics of World of Goo very much. And of course the game too. Thanks Clem bro for addidng it to repository. And thanks Clem bro, Husse bro and all community members for the wonderful distro.

Hi and welcome to Mint.

No one wants to answer a post like this.

It's best to have a separate thread for each problem.

It is true that many things are mixed in your post...

So just:

5. This is a Fedora problem. Here, you are in the Linux Mint forum so you should go to the Fedora forums.
6. Please, make a research before posting! In some seconds you would find my post for instance about fonts.

For Microsoft fonts, go to http://sourceforge.net then make a research for microsoft corefonts.... You will find http://sourceforge.net/projects/corefonts/files/ Download all the fonts in a same folder on your computer then type in a console (if cabextract is not installed in your system, install it with the package manager), you must be in the folder of the fonts of course:

Code: Select all

cabextract *.exe
Then as root:

Code: Select all

mkdir -v /usr/share/fonts/msfonts
And, always in the folder of the fonts:

Code: Select all

# cp -v *.TTF /usr/share/fonts/msfonts/
# cp -v *.ttf /usr/share/fonts/msfonts/
Then, always as root:

Code: Select all

# cd /usr/share/fonts/msfonts/
# mkfontdir
# mkfontscale
# fc-cache -f -v
Of course you must hit Enter at the end of every line...

And hop, your fonts are incorporated to the system. After the last command, verify if you see the line:

Code: Select all

 /usr/share/fonts/msfonts: caching, 30 fonts, 0 dirs
It says you the fonts are disposable. Then now, you can remove the folder where you have extract the fonts at first.

Whoa, there stranger..
Do you mean you downloaded and used the mint 8 Kde CE
--if so, why the concern about Gnome

1. No, A mint styled menu for Kde is Not available
--someone will have to create it, if the need exists: remember that the Kde version of mint is not the mainline, since mint follows from Ubuntu, which uses Gnome as their mainline desktop
  • Hence Ubuntu also provides Kububtu, and Mint also provides Kde CE (Community Edition)
3. Nothing to do with a Kde setup, unless you want to use Gnome applications in Kde

5. Nothing to do with Mint, Fedora uses an rpm (.rpm files/package manager) style system and Debian/Ubuntu/Mint use a Debian (.deb files/package manager)style system
--they are similar enough, but the location of libraries and operation is also different
Except the question is about a touchpad, if it worked or didn't work elsewhere on a different type of system, that doesn't matter; But we don't exactly know what you are using since you gave no specific explanation/description or data about your system and how it was setup (configured), which OS, which desktop, which applications -->that type of data

7. Can't think of any, don't play that many games
How about some simple on-line flash games
