After update Linux Mint 8, my wifi card does not work!

Post by detectivehemp »

My wifi card has been working great, until the other day when i had to update and it continued to work afterwards after the update had been finished but when i rebooted it just stopped. I have sought after help through the IRC and everything we tried only led to failure. I also followed this guide to the word https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... y_No-Fluff Another problem was that when i went to make sure that my hardware drivers were enabled one disabled and the other was missing i believe it was the broadcom b43 or something along those lines.

My technical details are as follows

Laptop model
Dell Inspiron 1545

Type of wireless card
Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

Here is a screen shot of another problem that arose after i preformed all the steps on the above URL.

The hardware drivers wont enable and gave me that error when i tried to enable them. The log of that the error refers to is below.

Re: After update Linux Mint 8, my wifi card does not work!

Post by remoulder »

According to the jockey.log you are using helena on kernel 2.6.31.19 so I don't know why you followed anything in that link as it is only applicable to much older releases. For the record it's best if you're not sure to ask for advice here before following any how-tos which may not be appropriate.

Can you tell us as much as you recall about what you did, in particular installing and deleting anything. Also open a terminal and post the outputs of the following commands

Code: Select all

inxi -N
lsmod
cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
cat /etc/modules
iwconfig
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

The guys in the Linux Mint IRC told me to follow that guide. I am very new to linux so it would probably be more helpful if i also posted the IRC conversation, i only did what TeamColtra had told me to uninstall or install. Just to be frank i have very little understanding of the commands that i used during the chat.

Code: Select all

<detective> Hello i recently preformed some mint updates for mint 8 and when i rebooted my wireless card does not work, any help would be much appreciated thanks
<TeamColtra> detective, you probably updated the kernel or something
* anyedie has quit (Client exited)
<TeamColtra> I know using the kernel I use seems to fix most wireless card issues
<TeamColtra> System: Host paradoxicon Kernel 2.6.31-16-generic-pae i686 (32 bit) Distro Linux Mint 8 Helena - Main Edition
<detective> TeamColtra , What can i do to fix it
<TeamColtra> apt install linux-generic-pae linux-headers-pae linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
<TeamColtra> I think at least the last
<detective> ok i will try that
>TeamColtra< detective@1337-lappy ~ $ sudo apt install linux-generic-pae linux-headers-pae linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
<detective> [sudo] password for detective:
<detective> Reading package lists... Done

<detective> Reading state information... Done
<detective> E: Couldn't find package linux-headers-pae
<TeamColtra> detective, try just linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
<TeamColtra> see what happened
<TeamColtra> happens
<detective> Ok
<detective> TeamColtra, would you like me to post the result in a priv msg?
<TeamColtra> post it here because I could be wrong
<TeamColtra> if its multi lined you can pastebin it
<detective> pastebin? im unsure of what you are talking about sorry im am still fairly new
>TeamColtra< http://pastebin.com/m2ddbdf8f
<detective> TeamColtra, Is that what you were talking about?
<TeamColtra> detective, I meant post it in here ... but let me look
<detective> TeamColtra, sorry
<TeamColtra> detective, try apt install linux-headers-2.6.31-19-generic
<TeamColtra> and restart

Re: After update Linux Mint 8, my wifi card does not work!

Post by remoulder »

OK, reading your IRC log it would seem your respondent basically had no idea what they were talking about.

You would only want to install the pae kernel if you had more then 4GB memory in your laptop and were running the 32bit version, it would no effect on your wireless connection.

You appear to be running ndiswrapper which uses the Windows drivers for your wlan card but as you have no wlan device they do not appear to be working. Have you actually installed any Windows drivers for your card that you remember?

You were asked to install the wireless backports which is good but with ndiswrapper they would no effect.

To be frank, I have to ask how easy it would be to re-install mint as otherwise you would have a fair bit to do to rectify things?

I could probably back-up my important data and do a complete format and install of mint, but i would also not want to take away what i could possible learn in the process of repairing my mistakes. What do you suggest (please take in consideration my will to learn) if you think that this would not be a very beneficial experience then i will reinstall and start over.

Wow what a leading question! :D

Guess it's your call, users here are only too willing to help, and we can go through things, but if looks like it's not going to work it'd probably be best to cut your losses and go for the re-install. If you want to try and seeing as you already have ndiswrapper installed, can you say if you've installed any Windows drivers or not?
