Mint-8 Can't configure to see modem

Post by azumi »

I just upgraded from mint-7 to mint-8 from the linux-user mag.

The problem I have is:

I use a Dell laptop with soundcard "modem" and the commercial hsf modem package from conexant.
On mint-7 everything works fine.

On mint-8 the modem (ALSA based ?) software compiles/makes fine but the hsfconfig that
needs running after says "no device detected by hsf driver"

Q: Is it possible I need source files for the kernel or ALSA ?
If so how do I set about getting them given that I need the modem to work first?

Is there a .DEB download repository somewhere?
Also how do I configure the dialup - I can't see the dial program?

If it isn't that any other help would be very welcome.
(Bear in mind I'm fairly new to linux)

TIA

Az.

As there was no response here I followed advice in another thread to remove "pulse audio" whatever that is.
The thread said it was incompatible with ALSA so how it got installed I don't know.

Anyway - I uninstalled it with synaptic and it trashed the entire installation.
I now have no desktop at all just a black screen.

I'm just trying to get a simple modem to work.

Help please?

OK So it MAY be working. I can't say solved because I can't find the ppp dialer to try it.

I reformatted the hard drive and re-installed from scratch again and it worked this time.
As this is what I did before I dont know what went wrong but I'm happy it's now working - maybe!
See my PPP dialer thread.
