tips on using Guarddog firewall?

I'm about two hours in to using Mint 7 KDE. When I used Gnome I only ever installed GUFW and enabled it. Guard Dog is obviously a bit more tricky. When I did what I thought was enabling it, it stopped me from being able to get any pages when online at all. I've disabled Guard Dog for the moment, but even though things are pretty safe with Linux I'd bet it won't always be that way and I'd like to have Guard Dog on with the correct settings. I'm just doing normal browsing, no torrents or anything like that, no gaming etc. Can someone help me out in foolproof wording? Thanks.

based on your use of the computer, I doubt that
--why ufw, gufw wouldn't be sufficient, I don't know; maybe you are being influenced by advertising alone; they all (firewalls) use/depend on iptables..

...Anyway, I read the manual, or started to. It's beyond me - as I say, I've only ever installed Gufw and enabled it or used a Windows Firewall insofar as I didn't disable it from its defaults, and while I was formerly using Limewire unblocking that; some areas of computer use are plain to me but not this sort of jargon-heavy stuff . What I did, instinctively or foolishly, take your pick, is to disable the guarddog, i.e. check the relvant box from within the program, and then in the terminal type

sudo ufw enable

and then enter my password and now I'm online and I assume with a firewall, minus whatever was going wrong with Guard-dog.

Is this okay?

Yes..

Not sure I would call using Limeware (music) normal browsing, but OK, everybody seems to be using youtube (flash videos) or other media streaming (radio, movies/trailers, or music files )

--guarddog may have changed some of the IPTABLE rules, so whether it is back to the default of deny all external connections or not, I can't say..
That's OK, it is also the same if you used gufw and also selected enable; it is running under any condition

I'm very happy devs included Guarddog, a powerfull yet easy & smooth to use firewall (IPTables front-end), just point and click =)

What you should keep in mind is once you run Guraddog for the first time it automatically blocks every communication from/to your computer, which isn't so useful if you want to do simple things like browse the web, chat (IM and IRC), send emails, share files or play embedded multimedia - let's keep other things like using VPN (tunnel connections) and so on out by the moment.

Guarddog is very powerfull yet pretty simple: just check the box of the service you want to use and you're ready (only once, if you check boxes twice the ports will be blocked instead of stealthed, that is invisible to outsiders). Guide yourself with the hints provided in the left pane. Some services/ports you definitely want to be allowed are: Limewire, MSN Messenger (or ICQ or Yahoo!, etc. depending the IM service you use), POPs, SMTP, HTTP & HTTPS, and so on.

If you find yourself stuck just drop me a line and I'll show you my own configuration - which may be work well for you too.

--I was going to include this entry in the original post, but you had already stopped guarddog and enabled ufw..

You can use that of course (Guarddog), however it would be a benefit to understand IPTABLES rules, you would then have a more complete understanding of firewall rules
-- and be able to decipher almost any firewall setup (commercial products or otherwise)

Should I download a free firewall, or just use the firewall that is already built into my PC? I'm planning on downloading Comodo Firewall, but I just got a new computer and was wondering if keeping the built-in one is better?

One thing you can do with guarddog (and remember there's an internet protocol and a local protocol in there) is to uncheck everything ("protocol is blocked") except for what you really know that you need. Then go from there.

For example, on my local zone I have everything unchecked (blocked). On my internet zone I only have a few things "permitted":

Under Data Serve: CDDB, FreeDB, NTP.
Under File Transfer: FTP, HTTPS, HTTP
Under Miscellaneous: PGP
Under Network: DNS, Ping

I don't even need all of those for my internet connection, but that's what my settings look like right now.

Start with fewer things permitted, see if things work, then permit what you need to permit. Once you are able to use your internet connection okay, go to ShieldsUp! (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2)or something and test your firewall.

I used to use Guarddog but it has not been upgraded in a long time and checking the official site march 2007 was the last release...
