Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
I always do if it's a major change but not for every one.

No. Never. I can wait for that new kernel to become active tomorrow.

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
It depends on what the update is. I'll immediately (or very soon thereafter) reboot whenever I'm prompted to. Otherwise, I just let it ride until the next time I would normally reboot anyway.
I will make a Timeshift snapshot before downloading and installing any updates that might be a bit dodgy, such as Kernel or firmware updates, so I can more easily recover if something goes wonky.

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
There's a cool if geeky package called debian-goodies, and one of them is checkrestart. If you run after an update in the terminal it'll give you a list of programs/services that need to be restarted. If the list isn't empty best to reboot,
Code: Select all
sudo checkrestart

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
Like Pjotr, I never restart. They take effect when I restart next morning
Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
50/50 sometimes after a kernel update, otherwise when I restart after shutting off the computer for the day. Usually after a kernel update.

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
Hi,
I reboot after kernel changes or after other changes before to make a Timeshift snapshot or a full system backup.
I want to be sure that what I back up does work.
Regards,
MN

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
I use only terminal to update and upgrade and my upgrade command is:-
This immediately shows me if a reboot is needed, for example following a new kernel, but thank goodness still allows me to keep going with whatever else I'm doing. I do however know a reboot is needed.
On my older spinning rust HDDs I mostly leave my machines in suspend mode, sometimes for a week or two, to save time as a cold boot can be tortuously slow if I need to work quickly.
Code: Select all
sudo apt full-upgrade && ls /var/run | grep reboot-required

I reboot when I'm prompted.

Good policy--at least we don't get nagged
Some updates are applied at reboot, some applied at login
Most are innocuous

Re: Curious: Do you Always Reboot After Updates
I don't generally reboot, except after firmware and kernel updates. I have learned the hard way, however, to restart my browser whenever it's updated.
