Linux Mint 21.3 recently shows incomplete shutdown

Post by gunauge »

Hello everybody
I`m new to this forum. I wonder if somebody can help me. It seems to be since the last update package for Liniux Mint 21.3: The engine doesn´t shut down properly. After starting the shutdown process via the software it starts the shutdown process properly but it goes until the point where the screen turns dark- but the power is still on. So I have to close by pressing the on/off button on my Fujitsu lifebook A555. It suggests that the shutdown process is incomplete and I fear that I could damage something so i think I should not proceed in this way.
The system reports dispayed no issues.
With linux mit 20.1 I had a similar issue but it was a bit harsher- i could solve it by turning back to 19.3.

As I am only a user and I am not very advanced in shell commands and I am not deep in computers it would be best for me to have an easy to go way :)

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice somebody out there could give me

gunauge

Re: Linux Mint 21.3 recently shows incomplete shutdown

Post by mikeflan »

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Please type this in a terminal the next time you want to shutdown. We are looking for any messages displayed in the terminal before it shuts down.

Code: Select all

poweroff
since the last update package for Liniux Mint 21.3: The engine doesn´t shut down properly.
You could restore a Timeshift snapshot from before the last update and that might fix the problem.
Then selectively update to determine which update breaks the shutdown.

You can also post the results of this in a terminal if you want to:

Code: Select all

journalctl -rb +1 | head -120
Post the output to this forum in "Code" tags. The button that inserts these Code tags is marked </>, which is in the mini toolbar above the edit box where you type your reply.

Welcome to the forum, gunauge.

Please open Update Manager and select View > History of Updates and either take a screenshot or list the recent updates. That is the only way we might know what you mean by "last update package". Not everyone updates at the same time so we need to know what you did.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of your system before this update package to which you can revert?

Is there a particular reason you do not have any swap? Your system only has 8 GB of RAM which is not a lot so I recommend using swap.

Code: Select all

Swap:
  Alert: No swap data was found.

Thanks for your advices
for using tieshift i should connect the externakl swap which i only do when upgrading linux versions.
I don´t understand what the external swap brings me with my limited RAM?
Could it help me with something when I would upgrade my RAM?

Wtih timeshift I could turn back to a very early version of 21.2., but the 21.3. did run wirthout problems

Anyway today the shutdown went smoothly.

The power off command didn´t show any signals in the terminal- it went just to the same point as when i used the menu- like before.

I cannmot copy the output of theupdate manahger it has 400 kB- the limit is 200.

So i have selected some updates which to my poor understanding might be relevant:

9.3.24 linux firmwar ubuntu 3.26 ==> 3.29
linux generic 5,15,0 97.92 ==> 5.15.0 100.97
linux lib c-dev 5.15.0 97 107 ==> 5.15.0100 110
dpkg-dev ubuntu 2.2 ==> ubuntu 2.3

10.3.24 cups-client 2.41 op1 ubuntu 4.7 ==> ubuntu 4.8

There are others KDE, feedesktop platform. org.gnome platform, firefox..

Normally I update everything which is suggested..

Anyway today the shutdown went smoothly. There was another update:
18.3. linux generic 5.1.50 100.97 ==> 101.98

Kind regards

Good idea. Me too.

Type this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

apt list --upgradable
Use Ctrl-Shift-c to copy from the terminal.

The entire point of having swap is to help supplement the RAM. The less RAM the computer has, the more likely it needs swap.

In fact on my computer I have had to increase the swapfile size because browsers nowadays need so much more resources. I didn't need to have as much swap a year or two ago in order to keep my system running well.

Provide the information suggested by mikeflan.

Hello SMG and mikeflan,
the terminal command apt list --upgradable gives the following output:

libcephfs2/jammy-updates 17.2.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 amd64 [aktualisierbar von: 17.2.6-0ubuntu0.22.04.3]
librados2/jammy-updates 17.2.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 amd64 [aktualisierbar von: 17.2.6-0ubuntu0.22.04.3]

It seems to be the the Ceph update suggested today in the update manager.

As to the RAM: the point for me is I don´t want to have the swap standing around and blocking one of my usb-ports which are all in use.
So if I need more RAM isn´t it practicable to buy a RAM module ? There are e.g. 8GB or 16GB modules suitable for my labtop.
Or should this be done by someone more skilled?

Thanks a lot for the discussion until now :!:

By default, Linux Mint creates a swapfile that is on your root partition. There is no usb port needed or involved. Why does your system need a usb port to have swap? I don't understand how you installed Linux Mint that you would need a usb port.

I am not familiar with Fujitsu laptops, but I would suspect there may be online video or instructions about changing the RAM. You could decide if it is something you think you can do.

Yes, that is very practical for you and I. No so practical for others.

Regardless of how much RAM you have it doesn't hurt to have a 2GB swap file sitting around that seemingly never gets used. If your system gets into some rare situation where a swap file would help and there is none, that could cause problems.
