[SOLVED] wifi detects network yet can't connect

Post by marmaladeskies »

Wifi was operational a few months ago but I only logged into it yesterday. Although the system detects wifi networks and notifies me that the connection is established, I am not actually online.
I've also tried hot spot and tethering but still cannot connect. I'm pretty sure that connecting it directly to the router would result in the same.

File is too large to import so here are a few highlights:

sudo iwconfig shows wlol with SSID, strong signal level.

sudo nmcli device shows connected state

uname -m X86_64

Result of pinging google.com -
Name or service not known

Whereas pinging 68.105.28.11 was successful.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Is it a DNS configuration problem, am I missing a network update.

Disable secure boot in Bios.
Also, turn power management off:

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

Manually disabled secure boot and all power management options in bios. Reboot. Still same result

No, it's a dedicated Linux OS, refurbished laptop - and I had no connectivity issues with it previously. It's been sitting idle for a few months though until I fired her up yesterday.

You can try shut down & unplug the machine, remove battery (if possible), hold the power button down for 40 seconds, & try wifi again.

For some reason I can't remove any of the screws, bar the center one so removing the battery is a problem. There doesn't appear to be an option in bios to temporarily disable the battery so my only alternative is to run down the battery and start from AC.

Sometimes the problem may be very basic:

Any switches (fn, bios, simple switches on your unit) turned off that should be on?

Bingo!!!!
My God, I feel so dumb but thankful also for your advice.
nordvpn set killswitch off...that's all it took. I didn't even know whether it was activated or not but it sure did it's job

Ok, good. Wish I thought of that sooner, but the changes you made earlier should be fine.
