No sound from built in speakers in the laptop.

Post by Pouek_ »

Hi!
Today, I installed Linux Mint 21.3 on my Asus GL552VW laptop. I completely wiped Windows 10 from the drive. Everything works perfectly, but the sound from the built-in speakers isn't working. I can hear the sound only when I plug in the headphones. I feel like I have tried everything that I've seen on this forum about sound issues and nothing worked. I tried hdajackretask, installing a newer kernel, installing an older kernel, pavucontrol, raising volume on headphones and unmuting them in alsamixer. Feels like I exhausted every possible option.

Have you checked the volume levels in alsamixer?:

Code: Select all

alsamixer

Yes I have. Even tried the unmuting headphones method and it didn't work.

Sound was working through the speakers in Windows 10?

Can you provide a screenshot (or shots depending upon how wide the output might be) of what you are seeing in alsamixer? You can attach the images using the Attachments tab below the reply box.

Edited to add: The person in this topic appears to have similar hardware and the same issue.

I compared this to my install and on my install the Auto-Mute Mode is Enabled. Yours is Disabled. See if changing that helps.

You have rebooted since doing that?

If you have bluetooth, you can see if bluetooth speakers provide sound for you.

It's possible this could be a hardware issue and something is stuck that should be switching between the headphones and the speakers when you remove the headphone plugs. (I have had that happen with an older laptop.)

Have you tried hitting Fn+F10 on the keyboard?

Yes I did.

Now here's something interesting. I connected my bluetooth speaker and at first the only thing I heard it playing was system sounds and nothing from the other apps. Then I opened the sound settings menu and clicked test sound->front left. Magically, it started playing audio from firefox and VLC. So that's interesting. This never happened while connecting headphones.

My sound is unmuted.

Edit: Forgot to add the Auto-Mute mode is turning itself off.

Bluetooth sound uses a different method than the other sound options. It is often the case people who cannot get sound through normal means have been able to get sound using bluetooth.

Knowing bluetooth sound works doesn't really help the investigation. It just gives you another option to get sound.

I remember that a few years back, the built-in speakers gave up on Windows. But I don't remember what I did that made them work again. Something in console, that's for sure, and I remember searching the whole internet finding one quirky youtube video that had the solution.
